Are You Fully Supporting Yourself?

The Idea Behind Supporting Yourself

If you attend a party in the U.S., one of the first questions a stranger is likely to ask you is, “What do you do?” Their meaning in the question: What do you do for a living? The question is directly asking about your vocation, employment—how you earn money to financially support yourself and loved ones.

Savvy Conscious Creator business owners will immediately spot the faulty thinking underlying the idea that support only means money and the way many see their jobs or business as their ONLY source of supply (money, opportunity, resources, connections, expansion). The only thing more absurd is expecting action, alone, to be the way to improve our life experiences.

Both concepts are the equivalent of looking into a mirror and expecting your reflection to change before you do!

Quite an irony, when mirror work is a wonderful way to shift faulty thought patterns!

Louise Hay Opened My Eyes About Supporting Myself

Being a person who knows how to surround myself with positive materials, I often listen to uplifting audio books. Recently, I was re-listening to the late Louise Hay reading her classic book, You Can Heal Your Life, when I heard her say something remarkable: The conscious and loving way she supported herself when she first began speaking publicly.

Now, I’ve read this book several times and listened to this audio book many times over the years, but this time I really HEARD what she was saying.

Louise consciously chose to speak only lovingly and positively to herself immediately after she stepped off the podium from delivering her first speech, reminding herself that she would only get better with experience.

What an amazing example Louise gave of supporting herself as a developing public speaker! This example is quite opposite of what many people do: Immediately berate themselves and find fault with nearly every aspect of their developing skills. We don’t expect babies to walk across the room perfectly on their first try, yet somehow we expect ourselves to immediately learn and flawlessly execute new skills.

A few hours after she completed her first speech, she sat down to consider improvements she could make so the next talk would be even better. Her support of herself as a speaker didn’t stop with speaking positively to herself. It continued with making her future work more effective.

Through the vibrational field in which we operate, the Law of Attraction is always lining us up with similar vibrational energy. When we send the signal that we fully support ourselves, the people, resources, opportunities, clients that fully support us and our success will also show up.

Listening to Louise tell her story made me stop and question myself:

Am I as fully supportive of myself as I can be?

Truly, I can improve in this area. Most people I know could benefit from being more supportive of themselves, as an individual, on the mental, emotional, and physical levels. Perhaps you, too, are reading this and have a similar response or perhaps you are seeing ways you can begin supporting your business.

Fully Supporting Ourselves

Let’s consider the other ways in which we could begin, this moment, to be more fully supportive of ourselves (as humans) and our businesses.

• Start with your self-talk – Our self-talk reflects our deepest held beliefs about ourselves. Is your business self-talk awesome, but your personal self-talk not so great? If you’re a business owner, the energy of your business feeds off of who you are as the person who runs the business. Energy knows no boundaries between you and your business. Just like with affirmations, it helps to decide in advance (when you feel good about yourself and your business) how you would like to speak to yourself, give yourself some good examples (like Louise’s), and practice them. This way, you’ll gradually become more familiar with positive self-talk, and when you occasionally think negatively, you’ll be able to re-direct yourself.

• Mental, emotional, and physical – Begin noticing, in your day-to-day life, how you can think, feel, and be more supportive of yourself and your business. Do you speak kindly of yourself, your business, your clients, your vendors, your experiences? Do you feel and practice  gratitude and appreciation on a regular basis? Do you take actions that support yourself and your business on all levels? If not, where could you use some help? Where you see improvement needed, be kind: Acknowledge your awareness as the first step in the right direction. Ask for guidance how to be more supportive and let the solutions find you.

• Engage in mirror work – Louise Hay was a huge proponent of using mirror work to bring faulty thought / limiting belief patterns to the surface for healing. She strongly believed that the mirror is a valuable self-help tool for moving through our own blocks. When you stand in front of the mirror to speak your new (preferred) self-talk aloud while looking into your eyes, you’ll FEEL where you are blocked. Don’t ignore it. Notice it and ask what needs to be healed. You know you’re on the right track when positive statements that used to feel uncomfortable begin to feel much better.

Note: If you don’t feel any discomfort when you speak kindly to yourself or about your business while looking into the mirror, that’s great. Keep doing it! Mirror work reinforces the positive subconscious messaging.

• Affirm, Journal, Meditate, Visualize – There are many self-help tools available for affirming, writing, visualizing, and opening our mind to supporting ourselves and our businesses. If we’ve held a long pattern of negative self-talk or not supporting ourselves, it can feel awkward to begin doing so. Wrap yourself in the same LovingKindness you would if working with a small child. We all have issues to work on, and we all have to start somewhere. Be the supportive adult you wish you had in your life, and call upon your own self-compassion to write out, visualize, and mediate on what being more self-supportive would look like in your world.

• Give up the struggle – Whenever we learn a new skill, there are going to be moments when we falter. Those are the times to double up on self-love. Remember that when learning new patterns feels too hard, it’s a good time to give up the struggle. Release it to a Higher Power. Evoke Easy World. Go take a nap. Get out into nature. Spend time with loved ones. You can always give yourself a fresh start and begin again. You’re developing a new skill, and that can take practice, patience, and persistence.

The more frequently and regularly we send the signal to the universe that we support ourselves and our businesses on all levels, the more comfortable it will feel. Soon, you’ll wonder why you didn’t think this way all the time!

Are you fully supporting yourself, as a human being, and your creative or healing business? If so, share what works for you in the comments below.

Creating Your Spirit-Guided Business

spiritHave you ever wondered how Spirit can help you grow, nurture, and sustain your business?

If you’re caught up in the day-to-day process of identifying, connecting with, and serving clients, processing payments, managing projects and vendors, you might have lost track of the spiritual connection with your business. I get it. I’ve been there, too.

Even with the most spiritual business there are still physical logistics and details that must be organized, managed, and overseen. How do we handle those when we’re not sure which decision is best?

Let Spirit Guide Your Business

When growing and running your business begins to feel like a never-ending chore, it can be the perfect time to step back and tap into Divine energy. Regardless of religious or spiritual beliefs, or the terms we use, most of us can agree there is One Energy Source from which is created All That Is.

That energy source can be a integral part of our business and all its components. As human beings, especially the founders of businesses, we can get stuck thinking we must know it all and have all the answers all the time. Yet the omnipresent and omnipotent Source / Spirit actually DOES know it all and have all the answers! Answers and perspectives we cannot not possibly know from our vantage point. Nor can we access it from a state of frustration or fear.

In his classic book, The Abundance Book, one of the most important premises that John Randolph Price wrote was the concept that no person, place, or condition is our supply:
spiritEmbracing the expansive consciousness that Spirit is our Supply—not our business or our customers/clients, is an important part of allowing Spirit to support, nurture, and sustain our growing businesses.

When we recognize that everything comes from One Source, and that One Source is our ultimate Supply, it changes how we view business situations, climate, interactions, transactions, and outcomes. Our own energy about our business changes. Clients/Customers as well as vendors and support members come and go as part of a positive energy alignment process. Everyone in the process is served well. Where a vacuum is created, something even better will take it’s place. Overall, it becomes increasingly easier to trust that Spirit’s wider perspective is helping us in ways we might not be able to foresee. As a result, we develop a deeper faith in our business success.

How to Invite Spirit Into Your Business

It’s easier to invite Spirit in than you might think, but first there are a few things to release:

A. Start by letting your ego take a backseat. By admitting that you cannot have the full perspective that Spirit has, you can let your ego off-the-hook for ‘being in control’, ‘knowing it all’, and ‘having all the answers’. Actually, it feels wonderful!

B. Cultivate a Willingness to Be Guided. To an outsider, this might look a little like giving up, but the energy is very different. Giving up can come from frustration and feeling like a failure, whereas a willingness to be guided is energetically opening up to guidance and wisdom to which you currently do not have access. You can do this by:
– Silently offering your questions to Spirit and asking for guidance
– Journaling your questions to Spirit, writing down what comes to you in response
– Affirmatively praying appreciation for Spirit’s presence, and for all wisdom coming forward on this subject
– Lighting a candle, or holding a crystal, as you cultivate the feeling of already receiving Spirit’s guidance and give thanks
– Use Abraham-Hick’s Placemat Process to write down what you need the Universe to help you accomplish (and be willing to let it go, knowing it’s taken care of)
– Starting and ending your business day with a 10-minute meditation to align yourself with Spirit’s guidance and involvement in your business decisions

C. Appreciate when Answers, Solutions, and Opportunities Arise. Mindfully appreciate the support that is coming through. Some of us might not notice it *in the moment*, but when it comes into our awareness we say, “Thank you, Spirit!” Give thanks in advance, as well. Regularly AFFIRM your receipt and appreciation for all the insight Spirit sends your way. The more you acknowledge the support you are receiving, the more Law of Attraction brings additional support into your awareness.

D. Do not Argue With / Resist What You Don’t Like. When answers, solutions, and opportunities show up like losing a big client or seeing a door close, do your best not to argue with or resist what shows up. Instead, ask “Spirit, how is this a blessing for my business?” and notice what comes up. If you get stuck energetically in resisting what shows up, you might miss the blessing that is coming right behind! When a big client goes away, a bigger and better one often shows up. When a door closes, something better is about to enter. Be ready, energetically, to receive!

E. Keep Spirit in the Loop. Many business owners begin inviting Spirit in when our business is struggling. When things start going really good with our business, it can be easy to forget this process and stop inviting Spirit to join you. However, when things start to spiral downward, you’ll be reminded why this is a process to continue for the entire life of your business. Keep it going, even when it doesn’t look like your business could get any better than it already is!

Now, I want to know: Do you let Spirit guide your business? If not, are you ready to start?

Find Out What the Walrus Knows!

Got someone on your Gift List who is open to new ideas and also looking to make changes in their life? One of the most unusual and interesting gifts for them this holiday season, actually any time, might be Sarah (Bamford) Seidelmann’s new book, What the Walrus Knows: An Eccentric’s Field Guide to Working with Beastie Energies.

Sarah Seidelmann, a Board Certified Anatomic and Clinical Pathologist and a Martha Beck trained Coach, invites readers to consider a path that was helpful to her when she began looking for fulfillment in her own life: Notice the animals who show up around you in nature, in your dreams, and in your heart. Which animals catch your attention? What IF their presence is not a coincidence, but a sign to guide you toward the next step in your life?

While such questions are common for those interested in shamanism, it might be less common for you or your friends. Even Seidelmann admits the idea had seemed beyond wacky to her, in the beginning. Before you dismiss this book or ideas, keep in mind that Seidelmann herself asked the above question while she was feeling deeply dissatisfied with her personal and professional life. The answers she received from nature on a regular basis led her out of the darkness and into the light.

On page 164, the author explains, “I’d been living a nature-starved, over-civilized life for a long time. My husband and I are both physicians, and we’re raising four kids. Add all my other interests into the mix, and the result was a constant state of overwhelm.”

As Seidelmann started spending more time in nature, taking more walks and noticing what was happening around her, she began to feel better. So, when she found herself drawn to a taxidermied Walrus in a little shop near her office, the author decided to learn more about Walruses and discovered they offer strength, abundance, gregariousness, deep diving, and even a touch of the psychic. Tapping into that energy, Seidelmann’s life began shifting in powerful ways.

That sent her on a journey of learning about power animals, and is the genesis of this 174 page book that walks you through learning more about using the animals in nature to find the answers on your own spiritual journey. After an introduction, readers are guided to learn about Guest and Core Beasties, then offered tools and exercises before delving into the resources section. At the back of the book, Seidelmann offers up 50 Beastie Manifestos (one page descriptions with key words and phrases) to entice, intrigue and illuminate the reader. The list is not exhaustive, but it is both very intriguing and highly entertaining.

For instance, encounters with a squirrel (an animal you are most likely to encounter on a hike in my neck of the woods) might be telling you (among other things) to relish restlessness, play on purpose, balance with poise, investigate, or hightail it! The manifestos give you a place to start on the journey of using nature as your guide.

This book is beautifully laid out, has enough meat to please even the most serious student of animal wisdom and enough irreverence to make it a lot of fun to curl up with a good cup of tea. That Walrus Seidelmann encountered may have been stuffed, but her take on the subject of Beasties is not the least bit stuffy.

Whether you buy this as a gift for yourself (admit it – this has intrigued you!) or as a fun gift for a questioning friend or family member, be sure to include links to Sarah Seidelmann’s Squirrel Radio – Magic of Animal Totems podcasts. Sarah and fellow Martha Beck coach, Tami McCall, laugh their way through sharing information and stories about animal totems. In addition to possibly learning more about animal totems, listening to the calls might even make reading the book that much more fun!
