Managing the NaysayersHas this happened to you: Feeling good, joyfully setting and working toward goals that delight you when, seemingly out of nowhere, appear the naysayers discouraging your efforts.

Naysayers are the people in our lives finding fault with our decisions, questioning our ideas, and unable to believe in new possibilities.

You can tell a naysayer because they limited the possibilities in their own minds, and are convinced what is true for them is also true for others. They are known for generalized statements such as:

The field is over-saturated.

It’s impossible to succeed.

No one makes money doing that.

You’re going to fail.

I wouldn’t bother, if I was you.

You can’t afford that…

Sound familiar?

Naysayers

Those comments, by the way, are a sampling of what I was told after starting my presentation design business in the 1990s.

It was easy for me to dismiss them because I could really feel in my heart that this was the way to go…and the right time to do it.

Turns out, there was a great need for the services I was providing, and clients sought me out. The first year I replaced my corporate income and the second year I was earning six figures.

I remembered this 18 months later when I envisioned myself buying a new home and found that my real estate agent was, in fact, a naysayer. She didn’t believe in my ability, as a self-employed single parent, to afford a home of my own. Rather than help me find something in my budget, she gave me a map highlighting to the worst part of town (with houses ready to be demolished).

The Blessing in Naysayers

As with all contrast, there is a blessing in having naysayers in our life. They show us what *we* believe. If we are discouraged by naysayers, that reveals how we are not believing in ourselves. Even an inkling of worry or doubt in us will become triggered by the naysayers.

However, if we truly believe in what we are doing, then we cannot be dissuaded no matter what anyone else says or does. Naysayer comments will seem empty or almost comical because we know what we want, and we already feel the strong momentum of our success is underway. Like someone telling a builder it’s impossible to build a building when it’s already framed up and ready to finish.

If we recognize the naysayer for who they are, a person projecting their own fears, doubts, and limited beliefs, then it is easier to forgive them and move past their comments. This is what I did with my naysayer real estate agent.

Rather than argue with her or try to convince her that she was wrong, I recognized that she was just not with the program I had embarked upon. She didn’t see or understand the magic that I was already creating in my life. I mentally patted her on the top of her head, forgave her for not seeing the magic, and went around her to get approved by a mortgage lender and find the property I wanted to purchase. Then, I contacted her again to finalize the purchase.

Some people might have skipped that last step, and found a new agent who believed in them. Because I knew this agent personally, and knew she needed the sale (naysayers often live a difficult life), I wanted to help her out. I also wanted to share the magic I was creating, so she could open her eyes to new possibilities.

Tips for Managing Naysayers

  1. As always, it starts with you: Get clear on your decisions before you discuss them with others. When you are solid in your knowing, clear on what feels best to you, comments from naysayers will not bother you. In some cases, they might even amuse you.
  2. Be choosy. Chances are, you are aware of some naysayers in your life right now. Unless you enjoy conflict, be choosy about who has the privilege of discussing your business decisions with you. Not everyone in your life needs to know every business decision you have made.
  3. Naysayers who are closer to you: Significant other or a business partner, and/or both, who are naysayers really challenge our commitment to our choices. Managing naysayers who live and/or work with us requires us to really be in touch with how we feel, and be willing to own our power to make our own choices. When you know what is important and which decision feels best to you, you’ll be better able to detach yourself from their comments.If your business partner is constantly naysaying, despite your business decisions always working out well, it might be a good idea to renegotiate how you interact. Perhaps you can agree to each make certain decisions without each others approval. Or you might want to find a new business partner.
  4. When you are your own naysayer it is time to go within and figure out what’s going on. If you cannot trust your own ideas and decisions, it’s time to work on your self-love and self-esteem. There is no room for success and well-being when we lack trust in ourselves.
  5. Use the naysayer triggers to look at your own doubts and fears. When someone elses naysaying bothers you, it’s a good indication that you harbor some of those same feelings. Otherwise, their comments wouldn’t trigger you.
  6. Bless the naysayers. Yeah, you read that right: Mentally thank and appreciate the naysayers for either showing you your own doubts and fears, or for revealing how solid you feel on the topic. Either way, they are providing a valuable service, and that deserves some appreciation!

Our Story Superpower

Our story superpower

When we can stand outside our own brain for a moment, in a position of being self-aware and mindful, we can tell a new story and our brain will engage with it. But we need to make it a story that’s short and powerful, or rich and redolent with detail, so we can light up more than just the language centers. We become the narrator and we can choose a better story.

We know that the brain uses its memory of the past to predict the future. We also know that memory is fluid and rewritable

We also know that when the brain is exposed to a story (reading, listening, watching), if there are rich sensory or emotional details included, our mirror neurons will activate and our brains will light up as though the story were happening to us, in that moment. If a story includes the word “cinnamon”, my olfactory system lights up. If I read Mr. Darcy’s passion for Elizabeth Bennet, my brain lights up with the thrill of a new love. And if I watch Meryl Streep eating Sole Meunière in Julie and Julia, I cannot help but salivate as my brain’s taste circuits light up.

It turns out that this quality of rich, redolent detail is a key factor in forming memory

Molecular biologist John Medina explains that when the brain detects an emotionally charged event, the Amygdala releases dopamine into the system. Because dopamine greatly aids memory and information processing, you could say it creates a Post It note that reads, ‘Remember this.’ 

This is why dry data is hard to remember. We need a juicy story in order to effectively form memories. We don’t remember the boring stuff.

So by telling a new story with lots of vivid detail, we are helping the brain write a new memory landscape from which to imagine a new future.

We even know that a very familiar phrase (for example “a rough day” or “raining cats and dogs”) can become so familiar and ordinary it loses its ability to light up other parts of the brain, as though it had become a single word. This is why authors avoid cliches if possible; they’ve lost their power.

And this brings me to the importance of having the RIGHT affirmations. The purpose of affirmations, like all good manifesting techniques, is to create change in the brain so it can deliver a new reality.

And we know from the research that two key things are required in order to make changes in the brain. 

One is that juicy rich engagement we’ve already mentioned. The other is consistent repetition. JanetteDalgliesh

So affirmations which are dry, or boring, or full of cliche, just won’t work. Similarly, affirmations which trigger painful memories won’t work. The key to powerful affirmations is to make them rich and redolent and pleasurable; and to use them daily in a way we enjoy. 

And to do that means you have to get self-aware. What lights YOU up? What words get you excited? What rituals will help you do this work daily?

In other words – YOU need to become the authority here~be willing to experiment and play! Give up judgement, embrace a spirit of curiosity, and explore different wording and language, different rituals and practices. Please make sure you’re taking advantage of Nancy’s great expertise.

If you are a frequent visitor to this blog, you are probably smiling and nodding your head. The Placebo Effect exhibited in this video is just one of the well-documented examples of how our beliefs can literally change our life experience. Many of us have wondered (more than just out loud), if the Placebo Effect is so effective (at least 30% of all placebos work better than the actual drug being tested), why aren’t we harnessing the power of the placebo with no side effects to heal versus harmful medications? Well, we know the answer from the past…we get to decide the answer for the future. 😉

Actually, many doctors hate the Placebo Effect and think it’s a hindrance drug testing. In fact, the Placebo Effect is so maligned in the medical community that most doctors want to figure out how to ELIMINATE it completely, rather than figure out how to make it work for us so we can take less medications. Imagine how much nations could save in national medical costs if we worked with placebos instead of eliminate them. 😉

Each of these women started the study feeling they needed something outside of them to make them more beautiful, and ended up discovering the deepest truth of life: life is an inside job. What a powerful and beautiful lesson that is!

How to Soften Contrast

At some point in the process of honing Deliberate Creation skills, someone will get mired in their contrast and ask “how do I get rid of contrast?”. Contrast is part of the experience of living in duality. So until you move on to another dimension without duality, Deliberate Creators are called to use their skills deliberately.

While I have broached the subject that ‘everything is a blessing’ many times, now more than ever this message is important to truly embody. The time for philosophizing is over. Now it’s time to LIVE what you have learned and continue to learn.

I was watching this video the other day, of Abraham (channeled by Esther Hicks) speaking to a group in California in February 2013, making this point beautifully (as usual). If you feel inspired to watch this video a few times or meditate to it in order to “feel the truth of it”, then do so. Follow what feels good to you as you watch this…

We are all connected energetically to each other through Source. When we make an enemy of any person or experience, we are also making an enemy of ourselves which creates a no-win situation.

Instead, BLESS the people or situations for what they are showing you…and while understanding they are helping you get clear about what matters to you, soften your attitude toward contrast. The contrast is less of an issue than your response to it, as your response has the power to hold you in that contrast.

When you bless the contrast, it will not only help you move through the contrast more quickly and smoothly, it is also a form of self-love. You are consciously acknowledging and finding value in another aspect of yourself. As you stop resisting what you don’t like, but rather use the information it provides to focus on what your preferences, then by the Law of Attraction the contrast must shift vibrationally.

You are the tuning fork to which the Universe is responding. What vibration are you transmitting? Soften your response to contrast, shift your vibrational tune, and the response from the Universe must shift as well.

Relishing the Renewal

As I wrote about in my February 2010 post, Aligning with Your Natural Creativity Cycles, once we have completed a large project, it’s not uncommon to desire a time for rest and relaxation. This is a normal part of the creativity cycle, and if we don’t allow ourselves this time, we often create illness or some other *road block* to provide it to us.

Now that I have completed the online portion of my latest project, a 7 part call series for small businesses entitled, Harnessing Your True Power: What to do BEFORE you take action!, I literally feel like I just gave birth to a HUGE baby with a 2 month-long labor!!!

By the way…

If you wonder why people charge for the audios and transcripts from these kind of series, take my word for it: It’s a HUGE undertaking, and most people wouldn’t do it in the first place if they realized it upfront. This is from someone who simply ADORED interviewing the experts and talking about this subject. That part, though adored, was only a fraction of the work involved! I worked nearly 16 hours a day, 7 days a week, for 60 days conceiving, creating, planning, preparing, and managing every detail of this series…and there were even more people behind the scenes helping *me*!

When you give birth to a human baby, the body’s hormones fill the mother with a myriad of conflicting emotions. I’m finding myself feeling similar conflicting emotions, sans the hormones. Part of me is ELATED to have this baby born, and  *out in the world* so I tell everyone about it, while another part of me…just wants to relax and sleep.

I recognize the latter emotions as a sign that I have completed the major creation phase of this project, and my mind/body, body/mind is ready to take a breather. I’ve learned to give myself this respit…it pays off! I stay healthy while I’m relaxing, and the next project benefits immensely. Honoring this part of me is not only good self-care, it’s good self-love. When we treat ourselves kindly, the universe mirrors that back to us in many ways.

While the major creative part of this project is over for me, I won’t consider myself *done* until the final transcripts have been provided to me, I do my magic-makeover on them, and they –along with the final audios– everything is officially delivered to all the folks who purchased the entire call series.

Which reminds me…

I’m Spiritual, Not a Doormat

Here’s an issue I’ve been wanting to blog about for quite a while: How nurturing and supportive are your relationships (partners, spouses, friends, clients, etc.)?

If you are on a spiritual path, sooner or later, it’s possible you have encountered people interpreting your being spiritual as  reasons to treat you like a doormat!

How the mistreatment manifests is varied, and not worth posting here. The bottom line is, if people are constantly expecting you to give in, let go, forgive their continual bad behavior, and accuse you of not being spiritual when you establish healthy boundaries, they are treating you like a doormat.

No, being on a spiritual path, leading your life with love and kindness is a choice. If others decide to take advantage of your kindness, it’s time to turn more love and kindness toward yourself.

Sometimes others might mistake this gentle kindness for a willingness– even an acceptance –to be mistreated or disrespected. No matter what they dish out, you seem unruffled and respond with kindness and understanding …AGAIN.

Sure, we all know someone who is going through a tough time right now and could use our kindness and understanding. But if the relationship is about you always giving, and never receiving in return, it’s time for a change.

Being spiritual does not make you another person’s doormat!

Unless…of course, you keep allowing it to be so.

Before I was conscious of this dynamic in some of my relationships,  I regularly allowed others to treat me like a doormat. Really, I cannot blame others because I never set appropriate boundaries, and then I allowed the situations to continue even though they were very distressing to me.

However, when I became more conscious and began setting boundaries, the majority didn’t like the new terms. It was so much easier behaving badly and having me take the slack in the relationship.

Trouble is, we do *teach* others how to treat us. When we have trained someone to be less than respectful or mistreat us for a long period of time, they get used to it. Then, they get resistant to changing when we decide to set a boundary that prohibits their behaviors.

This is in addition to folks who do not want to see us grow spiritually, raising our own vibration, this can make lower vibrating people uncomfortable with our expansion. Unless we choose to limit ourselves, and remain stuck where they are, there’s no real way around this: We are vibrating out of the lower energies, into the higher ones, and that means loving ourselves enough to let go of the draining relationships.

As we do this, the lower vibing folks often will not want to see our growth. They often see our progression as a threat and begin unconsciously attacking and/or finding fault with our choices. In order for them to feel *right*, we have to be *wrong* in their eyes. A very common response among the low-vibers. Heaven forbid they actually look at their own behavior and apologize. (gasp!) Then, they wouldn’t be so low-vibing…

Best way to deal with this? Be the bigger person. Flow them love. Wish them well. Let go. Move on.

Every one of us are spiritual beings living a physical life, experiencing our own spiritual journey, at our own pace. Those you’ve had to leave behind may catch up…or go a different direction. What they choose for themselves is not your business (and vice versa).

Your place is to love and appreciate yourself fully, including setting healthy boundaries for mutually appreciative  and respectful relationships. So, assess your relationships, set your boundaries, and choose to love yourself!

For some, imbibing migh be the only way they allow themselves to relax but there are healthier ways to experience adjustment. Nancy Barry-Jansson is an AffirmingSpirit Teacher/Mentor who has been working with affirmations since the mid-1980s. Having experienced great results for herself, she began casually teaching others who were inspired and uplifted by the experience. In 2000, she conceived of AffirmingSpirit Blank Affirmation Cards, and in 2003 she launched the product and website. Nancy created and ran the 2008 AffirmingSpirit Affirmation Study with participants across the United States to gather information about why affirmations work for some, but not for others. A year later, in 2009, she extended her offerings to small business owners with Quantum MasterMind for Solopreneurs.
