The Ultimate Commitment is the most important commitment you will make in your lifetime.

When we think about important commitments in our lives, we usually think of things like marriage, children, career, family, and so forth. No doubt, all of those are important, but what is the value of these commitments when one isn’t living well, not eating healthy or exercising, have no time for yourself or your thoughts, and are in a constant state of stress and/or survival mode?

The Ultimate Commitment

The ultimate commitment is the one most often forgotten: Commitment to Self. When I use the word Self, I am not talking about mindless selfishness or the-world-revolves-around-me narcissism. I am talking about the commitment to all of you: Your body, mind, and spirit, and the on-going well-being of all three. Another term for this is self-care.

Making the Time
Women, particularly, often find it easier to commit to helping others than to helping themselves. The irony is that we are really failing those we love and want to help when we haven’t taken care of our own needs first. The woman who makes certain she has regular self-care is not only happier, but also the one who then has the most to give others.

Your overall well-being, including mental attitude, nutrition, exercise, relaxation, and good sleep are the foundation for creating success in other areas of your life. A small amount of time each day invested in taking care of all of you, body-mind-spirit, will pay rich dividends. When you nurture these aspects of who you are, you will feel a deeper sense of gratitude that connects you better to those around you and to your passions. Your commitments to marriage, children, career, and family will feel like less of a burden, and more of a blessing. Everyone around you benefits.

Taking care of oneself is actually one of the least selfish things you can do.

Change the World
Looking for a way to build a better world? Begin where you are by focusing on making yourself happy. The ripple effect will transform those around you, and those around them, and so on!

When I was a newly-single mother trying to juggle a full-time job with motherhood, I was fortunate enough to participate in a single-parenting support group. The first session, the counselors told us that we each needed to find time for ourselves everyday to fill up our ‘Mommy’ bank—that never-ending source of unconditional love and support that our children need and draw upon.

At first, this made no sense to me and even seemed selfish. But, then I started noticing…on the days that I had a chance to exercise or have quiet time to myself, I was much happier around my son and his behavior seemed more manageable. What appeared as better behavior was, in part, due to my calmness around him coupled with an enhanced ability to cope when issues arose. Both of us benefited when I committed to my own self-care.

Since that time, I have made a commitment to take care of myself, and have watched my son grow into a happy, motivated, high school junior. There were ups and downs along the way, but what kept me sane and grounded was the time I took to take care of my body, mind, and spirit. I’ve never regretted the time I took to take care of myself so I could be a better parent, but I can’t say the same about other activities.

The Self-Care Secret
Recently, the Oprah Winfrey show featured women who looked young for their age. All of them had these things in common: They had positive mental attitudes, exercised regularly, took good care of their skin, and spent their days doing things that they truly loved. The show was incredibly inspiring, and proved that taking care of yourself not only makes life more enjoyable, it keeps you looking younger, and makes you more healthy!

If you are feeling resentful of the demands on your time, this is your wake-up call to make a shift. Take time to notice what’s working, and what’s not. Release what is no longer working for you, and make a plan to do more of what is working for you! I can’t make this change for you. Your neighbor can’t make any changes. It’s all up to you.

Your current and future health and well-being rest on your commitment to self. Regardless of how much you have to change, the good news is that you don’t have to do it all at once. Start by making one change a week. You can easily change one aspect of your life this week, and get the ball rolling.

Affirming Your Best
One of the best ways to nurture a positive attitude is by creating and using positive affirmations. Feeding your mind a steady diet of positive thoughts is a very powerful and effective way of building your self-esteem and creating positive change for your life. The brain does not know the difference between reality and perceived reality, so as you read and say affirmations repeatedly, the brain begins to see it as reality.

Even more important is the emotion behind those words and thoughts. Heart science has proven that positive thoughts combined with emotion causes our heart, and the electro-magnetic field it generates, to vibrate in coherence. This coherent state causes all the organs of the body to function better as well as the release of beneficial hormones in the brain. Our body literally *shifts* energetically to embrace positive change!

Change, in itself, is neither good nor bad. Change is what we make of the experience. For example, underweight people might be happy for weight gain, whereas overweight people would not be so enthusiastic. How you feel about the change in your life is key to how you will experience it.

Change can be daunting unless you prepare your mind for the process, which is precisely what affirmations can do for you. When you say your affirmations, do you feel uplifted and happy? If so, you know that you are ready for that change to take place. If not, either the wording of the affirmation or it’s intention, the meaning behind the affirmation, is not aligned with what you really want.

For instance, if you say you want to lose weight, but sub-consciously feel it’s too difficult, then no amount of affirmations will allow you to experience weight reduction. The counter-intention (that it’s too difficult) is too strong!

When you are able to recognize the need for change(s) and feel motivated to experience them, you are at a place where affirmations will be most effective in helping you make the change. The good news is that you can’t really make a mistake, so it’s worth reaching for the experiences (and affirmations) that make your heart sing.

Not motivated, yet? Don’t beat up on yourself.

Procrastinating—or not feeling motivated to take action—is just a sign that your vision and your reality are not quite aligned. Relax and think about what you really want. When you are ready, inspiration and motivation will be effortless, as will be taking the appropriate actions. We’ll be there for you when you are ready to make the Ultimate Commitment.

Exploring an Ancient Energy Clearing Modality: Ho’oponopono

I’ve been wanting to write about the Hawaiian energy clearing technique, Ho’oponopono (Ho – oh – po – no – po – no) for quite a long time. I’ve had amazing success with it, even though I didn’t really understand how it worked. That was, until I began learning about Quantum Physics and the work being done by HeartMath.

Wait, I’m getting ahead of myself.

It was Dr. Joe Vitale’s viral article that first taught me about Ho’oponopono in 2006. Upon reading the article, I thought it was interesting, but to say I was skeptical would be an understatement! In the article, Joe talks about understanding full responsibility in a profound new way after hearing about the simple way a native Hawaiian psychologist named Dr. Ihaleakala Hew Len cured an entire prison of criminally insane patients without ever seeing the patients in person. At first blush, that sounds pretty wacky, doesn’t it?!? How could this be possible that anyone can heal themselves and others by silently saying a series of phrases? Dr. Hew Len healed himself by silently repeating…

“I’m sorry…

Please forgive me…

Thank you…

I love you”

While the article was intriguing, I had a hard time believing that saying such words to myself would have any impact.
A day or two after I read the article, I was in the car with my then-teenage son who was mad at me for pulling him away from Facebook on a perfectly beautiful sunny day, so we could take a hike in the hills and have lunch together. I know, what kind of mother asks her child to get away from the computer and out into fresh air and sunshine? Cruel and unusual punishment for a teenager, I’m sure.

Anyway, my son was ranting and screaming at me in the car because he wanted to be cooped up at home on Facebook. Initially, I began arguing with him, when I *remembered* this article and Ho’oponopono. At that point, I stopped arguing and began silently saying to myself, “I’m sorry, please forgive me, thank you, I love you…”  Now, from my son’s perspective, I had just stopped arguing and was *listening* because I was quiet. And I was. But we were both also feeling my shift in energy from defensiveness to inner peace. In addition, I also noticed that by saying those words to myself, I felt safe and protected even though he was screaming horrible things in my direction. I felt like I was in a protective bubble  and his words were heard, but not as hurtful as they would normally feel.

To my surprise, my son immediately began calming down. Then he said something that sounded like he felt hurt. Silently, I responded, “I’m sorry, Please forgive me”, and then resumed, “I love you, Thank you.” Within minutes, my son’s anger had completely de-escalated and he was speaking calmly to me. Moments later, as we were now driving up into the hills, he was enjoying the view of hawks and lizards out his window, and appreciating the changing landscape. His anger was gone and I was impressed. I didn’t know *how* this had worked, all I knew is that it did work!

A few days later,  I recounted this story to a friend and sent her the article. The next day a business conference call gave her the chance to try this technique. Her results were similar: An angry/ranting co-worker completely calmed down in minutes, then apologized to everyone for his rant. The remaining conversations during the conference call were very calm and productive. My friend was amazed because this angry co-worker usually tied up every conference call with 45 minutes worth of yelling…and after using Ho’oponopono, he stopped at 5 minutes and the rest of the call was easy!

I’ve even used this with strangers around me! Whenever I am around people in public who are arguing or being mean to each other, I silently say the words to myself. I don’t even need to be looking at them. Invariably, they stop arguing and start getting along…and I continue on my way with a smile on my face.

By the way, we are not saying these words to the other person(s) around us, we are saying them *to ourselves*. I recommend you read more about this, including the article link above, and/or click on Dr. Len’s photo to read articles about this on his site. The videos below will also explain it in greater detail. When we say these phrases to ourselves, people around us hear nothing, but they have the sense of being heard, even if we are not looking at them. Dr. Hew Len says that we are cleaning the data in our own subconscious, and that causes an effect in our experience.

But don’t take my word or others for it…try this out yourself and see what you discover. You’ll learn far more by trying it yourself than just reading about it. All of us have responsibility for how we feel, and to notice what feels best for us, and there is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all solution. If you understand Quantum Physics, then you’ll understand more how when we shift our energy we shift the energy of everything around us. Until you experience it personally, though, it remains a theory.

Relishing the Renewal

As I wrote about in my February 2010 post, Aligning with Your Natural Creativity Cycles, once we have completed a large project, it’s not uncommon to desire a time for rest and relaxation. This is a normal part of the creativity cycle, and if we don’t allow ourselves this time, we often create illness or some other *road block* to provide it to us.

Now that I have completed the online portion of my latest project, a 7 part call series for small businesses entitled, Harnessing Your True Power: What to do BEFORE you take action!, I literally feel like I just gave birth to a HUGE baby with a 2 month-long labor!!!

By the way…

If you wonder why people charge for the audios and transcripts from these kind of series, take my word for it: It’s a HUGE undertaking, and most people wouldn’t do it in the first place if they realized it upfront. This is from someone who simply ADORED interviewing the experts and talking about this subject. That part, though adored, was only a fraction of the work involved! I worked nearly 16 hours a day, 7 days a week, for 60 days conceiving, creating, planning, preparing, and managing every detail of this series…and there were even more people behind the scenes helping *me*!

When you give birth to a human baby, the body’s hormones fill the mother with a myriad of conflicting emotions. I’m finding myself feeling similar conflicting emotions, sans the hormones. Part of me is ELATED to have this baby born, and  *out in the world* so I tell everyone about it, while another part of me…just wants to relax and sleep.

I recognize the latter emotions as a sign that I have completed the major creation phase of this project, and my mind/body, body/mind is ready to take a breather. I’ve learned to give myself this respit…it pays off! I stay healthy while I’m relaxing, and the next project benefits immensely. Honoring this part of me is not only good self-care, it’s good self-love. When we treat ourselves kindly, the universe mirrors that back to us in many ways.

While the major creative part of this project is over for me, I won’t consider myself *done* until the final transcripts have been provided to me, I do my magic-makeover on them, and they –along with the final audios– everything is officially delivered to all the folks who purchased the entire call series.

The Earth was created in well-being and it continues to be, and so I make a conscious decision to support it vibrationally with positive energy. Intentional Resting for the Earth is a great way to release your own anxieties and shift toward feeling you are helping, rather than contributing to the problem.

You Are Always Creating


We are creative beings in a vibrational universe that responds to our moment-to-moment energetic pulse.

While the vast majority of people on the planet are still creating unconsciously ~ reacting to the world around them ~ YOU can choose to be a conscious, deliberate Creator *right now*! Others are not unconsciously reacting and creating havoc because they want more things things to complain or worry or fear about, but because they have not decided to be *conscious about their life*.

You are always creating ~

In 2000, she conceived of AffirmingSpirit Blank Affirmation Cards, and in 2003 she launched the product and website. Nancy created and ran the 2008 AffirmingSpirit Affirmation Study with participants across the United States to gather information about why affirmations work for some, but not for others. A year later, in 2009, she extended her offerings to small business owners with Quantum MasterMind for Solopreneurs.
