Deciding To Embrace Change

change

[This article was previously published on AffirmingSpirit.com. It has been revised and updated for the enjoyment of blog-readers.]

Recently, I wrote an article about the incredible power of decision, about how just deciding what you want can create the opportunities for that creation to appear in your life. Our decisions, whether conscious or unconscious, align us with the vibrational equivalents for opportunities and actions. In this post, I’m inviting you to consider whether you’ve made, or are ready to make, the decision to change what isn’t working in your life.

To Decide or Not to Decide: Is CHANGE the Question?

A few months ago, during a coaching session, the client brought up three experiences that were upsetting her. To her, these experiences were unrelated, but they all frustrated her. As I listened, I could hear the common thread in what she was saying: All three of her experiences reflected that she felt unappreciated for her hard work, and in some cases, disrespected by people around her.

When I brought this to her attention, she was surprised as she had not seen the commonality in her experience until that moment. I told her the good news is that she could decide to change right there, right that minute while we were talking. All she had to do was embrace the decision to change. She could begin by creating positive self-talk affirmations such as

I am respected and appreciated by everyone around me, and I respect and appreciate myself!

I allow others to respect me, and show it in positive ways!

Everyone I interact with treats me with respect and appreciation!

It’s Easier to Change Than Remain Suffering

The gal I was coaching was ready to make a change. She had reached a point where she no longer wanted to experience those same frustrations, and she recognized a long-standing pattern in her life that needed to change if she was going to move forward.

So, she embraced these new affirmations immediately, saying them with conviction and belief that she was already creating what she wanted. Within 24 hours, she reported noticing respectful and appreciative behavior all around her…particularly from the people she previously felt were not behaving that way!

Her discovery? What she wanted was all around her as soon as she was open to seeing it. While she was convinced that others were disrespectful, that is how she perceived others’ behavior and that is what showed up for her. As soon as she changed her focus, what she perceived and experienced changed as well.

When we talked afterward, she shared that making this shift in perception helped her to appreciate life so much more than before she had reached out for help during coaching. That comment made it clear to me that choosing to make positive changes is far more rewarding than staying in suffering. Our egos will convince us that change is not possible…it’s too difficult…it can’t be done…it’s better to stay where you are. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Changing is really easier than most people think, and it starts by making the decision to change.

Are You Ready for Change?

In the above example, if she had not been ready to change, she wouldn’t have been able to do the affirmations with feeling and would not have seen any changes. She may even have found excuses why she didn’t have time or energy to say the affirmations…or kept forgetting to say them. This is just resistance to change. Most people think change will be too painful, but the truth is NOT changing is often more painful.

How do you know you are ready for change? You can feel it. You know you are ready when you realize what you are experiencing is not working for you, when you are open to suggestions for shifting (like saying affirmations), when you can feel your life could be better and you are no longer willing to repeat the same mistakes. You can feel it inside yourself that it’s time…and, if you aren’t sure you can do it by yourself, you begin considering reaching out for help.

Likewise, when you aren’t ready, you’ll find all kinds of excuses to not reach out for help. Suddenly, you’ll create tons of reasons that tell you, “now isn’t the right time”. Follow what feels best to you, and you will take action when it’s the right time for you.

This is Your Life: There’s No Wrong Answer

Keep in mind that there is no wrong answer when it comes to your life. If you are choosing to stay where you are, that is because it is right for what you need to experience in this moment. As soon as you are ready to embrace change, you will find the help you need and begin taking appropriate steps.

In the meantime, love and accept yourself for who you are and how wonderful your life really is!

Thinking About Others

The Thinker by Auguste Rodin, California Palace of the Legion of Honor, 2007

In the last week alone, I have had at least three people ask me this question:

How can I possibly feel good when [fill in the blank people, animal, or organization] is experiencing [fill in the blank hardship or difficulty that seems unfair]?

The Law of Attraction is always working, whether we believe it or not. Like a tuning fork, we are sending our vibration out into the quantum field. The Law of Attraction is lining us up with like-vibrations in people, locations, and experiences. When people first learn about this, they do their utmost best to stay positive about their own life, but often struggle to maintain a positive attitude about people and situations around them that seem unkind or unfair.

There is no need to expand on what those negative situations could be since most of us can quickly identify those in our own experiences. Worrying and fearing for oneself or others is praying for what you don’t want. Instead, make the decision to use your energy to uplift yourself and others.

10.2013.ThinkingAboutOthersWhile it’s true that we cannot create in the reality of another person because we cannot think and feel for them, feeling bad about or for another person only lowers your vibration and consequently will drag you down. In this way, even choosing to think bad about someone else is also harming you. What you give out energetically is what you receive back.

Vibrationally speaking, how would you want others to view you? Would you rather have them feeling pity for you, worrying about you, imagining the worst…or would you rather have them seeing you as capable, strong, successful, and easily able to overcome anything?

Think back on the hardships you’ve experienced. With hindsight, most people can say that every hardship they’ve endured helped them learn more about themselves and grow positively from the experience. Personally, I’ve discovered that every experience holds the seeds of blessings, if we are willing to see it that way. It’s not up to us to deprive others of their opportunities to learn and grow, but we can positively support them in their journey.

Like the time when I was 15 and the adults around me were clearly suffering from the belief that I had uterine cancer. X-Rays showed a mass over my uterus, but without major surgery they wouldn’t know for sure. Fortunately, I had an inner knowing that said I was fine, so I couldn’t figure out why people were putting so much attention on a negative outcome that wasn’t going to happen. Turns out, it was benign cysts on my ovaries that were easily removed during surgery. While I told every one around me that I was fine, I also let them hold onto whatever belief they wanted. Looking back, though, it would have been nice had the adults around me been imagining the best into the unknown, seeing me as coming through the situation with ease and trusting that all was well.

Research is now showing that it matters what the doctor thinks, too.  That is, if you give that kind of power over to your doctor. Even as a teen I was clear that the doctors were wrong and they’d eventually figure that out, which they did. I remember my mother saying she wished that she could trade places with me to prevent me from dealing with this, but that experience at age 15 taught me many important things that I have carried through my life.

What about when you don’t have a inner knowing that all is well? Cultivate it. Start where you are, and build from there. See the blessings that are always present. Appreciate what is working well, notice how the situation is better than it could have been, and begin to look for ways that good could present itself. As you make this your practice, you’ll find it gets easier and more fun…and the results make it worthwhile.

For most of us, seeing others as capable, strong, successful, and finding their way through their situation will feel better than fearing, worrying or gossiping about them. Am I expecting you to be jumping for joy and celebrating someone’s hardship? NO! I’m not saying that.

This is what I am saying: hold the space for hope and possibility for others. Be the person in their life/lives that imagines the best outcome possible and sees them as capable, strong, thriving, and benefiting from the experience. For some people, you can be present around them during their struggles and others you may need to distance yourself. Either way, thinking well of them and holding a space for good will benefit everyone involved.

Not only will this feel better to you, the onlooker, but it will feel good to them to know someone sees a light at the end of the tunnel. You’ll appreciate it, too, when they return the favor during your difficult moments.

Your turn! What helps you stay positive and imagine the best outcome for those you see suffering? Share your comments below.

Wednesday Waves!

Inspired by DailyAlchemy.com’s Michelle Dobbins Monday Raves, a list of things that are going right for her, I’m offering you Wednesday Waves…inviting you to ride the waves of inspiration and appreciation!

Here’s a beautiful picture of Peter Mel surfing the local Northern California Mavericks, big wave surfing site. Get ready to ride this wave…

1 | Appreciating the beauty of nature   I am so blessed to live near some of the most amazing natural sites including mountains, Pacific Ocean, and marshes. The nature trails alone, are awe-inspiring vistas and filled with wild animals like deer, wild turkey, quail, hawks, rattle snakes, bobcats and mountain lions. If you have access to nature, consider yourself blessed!

2 |  Enjoying a walk in the sunshine  Even if I don’t get out to the nature trails, a walk in the sun in my own neighborhood is uplifting. It’s fun to see the ways different people have chosen to landscape their front and side yards. The area is full of all kinds of birds, including crows, as well as squirrels, cats, and dogs. The movement, fresh air, sunshine, flora and fauna all come together to makes it a wonderful sensory experience. With your endorphins flooding into your circulating bloodstream, this is a gift you can feel good about giving yourself often!

3 | Appreciating the power of kindness  On my neighborhood walks, I often come across stray dogs who just need a little help finding their way back to their Mommy or Daddy. Even when I get surprised by a loose pit bull, it’s fun to see them appreciate and gently respond to kindness. One time on a walk in a new area, I was frightened by a full grown Mastiff who was on a huge chain in his front yard. He was barking, growling, drooling foam, lunging and straining to get to me as I walked by. It was scary, and yet, something inside me made me stop, put my hand up, and command him to “Sit!”  Not only did he immediately sit, he wagged his butt furiously, and his eyes told me he wasn’t straining to bite me…he was straining to get attention from me.  At this point, it was pretty clear he was just lonely there on his chain, and wanted anyone who passed by to give him some undivided loving attention. What a big, slobbery Teddy Bear he was! 😀

4 | Loving all things kitty cat  Raised with dogs, I find kitties to be amazingly intelligent, gentle and benevolent creatures. They know they have a choice with whom they spend time, and they won’t abide someone who treats them poorly. Whenever a kitty blesses me with their affection, I know I earned it! Somehow it makes me respect and admire them even more. A day doesn’t go by where I have not appreciated a kitty. Whoever “thought up” the idea of kitties did a great job! 😀

5 | Inspired by affirming thoughts  I don’t know anyone, including myself, who feels positive 100% of the time. We all have our own issues, and can feel overwhelmed by them from time to time. Lately, I’ve really seen how quickly I can shift from negative to positive with a sequence of affirming thoughts. A Course in Miracles (ACIM) states that miracles are a shift in perception, and by affirming some good-feeling thoughts, we can shift ourselves into a miracle. Most of the struggle we experience is created by fear-full thoughts, often projected into the future…not the experience, itself. If you are feeling fearful, get yourself back into the present, and begin affirming what’s going right for you in this moment. Give it a try!

6 | Excited about inspiring interviews  My friend, Laura Gevanter of Present Tense Coaching is interviewing Bruce Lipton, PhD, the stem cell biologist and former medical professor who discovered at Stanford University (while on sabbatical) that human genes are NOT set in stone, but effectively turn on and off in real-time based on our thoughts and emotions. Laura will interview him about his latest book, The Honeymoon Effect. Listen to that interview live at 3pm ET, Wednesday, May 15th ~ or listen afterward to the recording on Life In The Present Tense Radio.

7 | Appreciating open dialogs  One of the things I know Laura will ask Bruce Lipton is about Angelina Jolie’s decision to endure a double mastectomy because she carries the “faulty BRCA1 gene”. While it is absolutely her body and her decision, I do wonder if Angelina would have made the same decision if her doctors hadn’t scared her into doing so. AND I truly appreciate that Angela’s action is opening the dialog about our bodies and our health. It’s blowing the door open on the women’s health/women’s body discussion, which I hope leads to a discussion of everyone’s health and body. Meanwhile, Lissa Rankin, MD, has responded to Angelina’s news with additional information that other women may want to consider before making the same decision. Ironically, Angelina’s news and Lissa’s post came on the heels of my watching her AMAZING interview on The Good Life Project that really opened my eyes to the horrors facing medical doctors as well as the science behind how we heal ourselves:

How to Soften Contrast

Abe Rampage

At some point in the process of honing Deliberate Creation skills, someone will get mired in their contrast and ask “how do I get rid of contrast?”. Contrast is part of the experience of living in duality. So until you move on to another dimension without duality, Deliberate Creators are called to use their skills deliberately.

While I have broached the subject that ‘everything is a blessing’ many times, now more than ever this message is important to truly embody. The time for philosophizing is over. Now it’s time to LIVE what you have learned and continue to learn.

I was watching this video the other day, of Abraham (channeled by Esther Hicks) speaking to a group in California in February 2013, making this point beautifully (as usual). If you feel inspired to watch this video a few times or meditate to it in order to “feel the truth of it”, then do so. Follow what feels good to you as you watch this…

We are all connected energetically to each other through Source. When we make an enemy of any person or experience, we are also making an enemy of ourselves which creates a no-win situation.

Instead, BLESS the people or situations for what they are showing you…and while understanding they are helping you get clear about what matters to you, soften your attitude toward contrast. The contrast is less of an issue than your response to it, as your response has the power to hold you in that contrast.

When you bless the contrast, it will not only help you move through the contrast more quickly and smoothly, it is also a form of self-love. You are consciously acknowledging and finding value in another aspect of yourself. As you stop resisting what you don’t like, but rather use the information it provides to focus on what your preferences, then by the Law of Attraction the contrast must shift vibrationally.

You are the tuning fork to which the Universe is responding. What vibration are you transmitting? Soften your response to contrast, shift your vibrational tune, and the response from the Universe must shift as well.

In this video, Abraham rampages appreciation for life. From this rampage of appreciation emerges many positive affirmations in the video, including this one:

Everything affirmation

What other affirmations or insights do you get from this video? Share your thoughts about the blessing of contrast below…

Moment-to-Moment Commitment

A fellow Good Vibe University member shared an Abraham video today and that reminded me reminded me of the commitment I have long-since made to Deliberate Creation…

You have control over the direction of your thought. And the way you feel is about the direction of your thought. You have the ability to focus in ways that you have not exercised. Too many people are dependent on the behavior of too many others which you can’t control. Then it puts you in this uncomfortable position of needing to be true control freaks in order to feel good!

when you get it, when you decide early on or as soon as you can, that you’re going to stop trying to control the uncontrollable, which is everything that everybody else is doing…stop trying to control the uncontrollable and control the only ting you CAN control, which is your relationship with your Vortex!

Let Law of Attraction do all the controlling. And you just adjust your vibration.

You create a better world ONLY from inside the Vortex!

I don’t just teach about deliberate creation and processes like affirmations, visualization, and meditation – I live it and I practice. I recognize it is my choice. Every day. Every moment. Even when I thrash around in resistance, I know that there is a choice to be made.

Sometimes it’s easy to make the choice to think better-feeling thoughts, and I do. Sometimes it’s hard to make that choice, and I yet I still do. Sometimes I am so off-center vibrationally that it takes time for me to right myself before I am ABLE to make a better choice. As soon as I can, I usually do…because it’s part of my commitment to the practice of Deliberate Creation. Yes, focusing takes effort—although not as much effort as thrashing around in resistance.

How EASY we make the moment-to-moment choices to feel better has more to do with our own thoughts, ego, and willingness to see life from a different perspective. Get really good at questioning your thoughts regularly. Recognize your stories and weed out the ones that don’t serve you. Be willing to let go of what isn’t working in favor of what does work for you. (Sometimes, your only guide to what is working better is ‘what feels better right now’.) For me, making that commitment and practicing it has made it easier to get out of my own way.

Your turn —what do you do to get out of your own way and have you made the commitment to Deliberate Creation? If you haven’t made that commitment, are you willing to consider it?

Talking it Out: Affirmative Conversations

My son amazes me. He’s not interested in Law of Attraction, per se, yet he intuitively works many of the principles.

For instance, he’s always making conversation about what matters to him. When he wanted a car, he spoke about why he wanted a car, why it would be useful to him, where he would drive it and the trips he would take.

He spoke about it so often that eventually his Dad agreed to take him car shopping. His Dad didn’t expect to find anything on the first shopping venture, but our son didn’t know that. Standing in my office the night before the shopping trip, my son enthusiastically said, “I am so excited about getting my own car, I can FEEL it! Right now, my car is out there ready for me to pick it out and drive it home!”

He was so enthusiastic, it was infectious, and I really believed him when he spoke those words! As a mother and Deliberate Creator, I couldn’t have been more proud.

Much to his father’s surprise, our son DID locate an amazing used car the next day that was in excellent condition, had low miles, very well cared for and in a price range he could afford. That day, seven months ago, within hours of starting his search, he located and proudly drove home his first car.

Hans Jenny, the Swiss medical doctor and natural scientist, coined the phrase Cymatics for the study of wave phenomena and vibration that shows the transformational nature of sound. The work of Jenny and his ground-breaking book, Cymatics: The Study of Wave Phenomena, made sound visible and made us aware how sound literally transforms the energy around us.

When we speak in conversations with others, we are changing the energy around us (literally). Now we know from work done by the Institute of HeartMath that our thoughts combined with their related emotions is transmitted through our heart into the quantum field. Whatever we send out is mirrored back to us vibrationally.

Ask yourself if what you generally speak about with others is affirming what you want to experience or affirming what you do NOT want (complaining)?

Complaining keeps us stuck in victimhood. However, when we make the choice and commit to only speak affirmatively about the things we appreciate, enjoy and want to create more of, the results are truly *magical*!

How often do you have affirmative conversations with, speaking about what you really appreciate?

How can you have more affirmative conversations and more often?

Don’t have anyone you can have affirmative conversations with? Don’t let that stop you. Speak aloud to yourself!

If you are a pet owner, remember, you can also speak to your pet about your dreams and plans. I guarantee you, your pets enjoy the sound of your voice, and you may be surprised how much they love having you talk directly to them!

Do you have similar stories of speaking affirmatively and experiencing a positive result? Share it below in the comments!

Releasing Your Victim Status

How often do you feel like a victim? How often do you feel like things happen TO you, instead of FOR you? Some of you reading this will probably say never, and if so you might really want to look a little deeper.

This is not easy to admit, but recently I became aware that I was raised to feel like a victim. In no way do I blame my family. I doubt they set out to *make* me feel that way, let alone to feel that way themselves, but it still is the truth: I was raised to feel and act like a victim.

I know I was raised to feel this way be cause my family’s favorite pastime is complaining! Not only did the adults around me model how to complain, we were actively encouraged to look for things to complain about and rewarded with extra attention when we did. In family gatherings, not only could you get lots of attention for complaining, most times the rest of the group would join in and add their complaints to the mix!

But it didn’t stop there. Complaining wasn’t even JUST the favorite pastime in my family, but in the culture around me, where it’s still active every where in our media and news sources!

But that was then, and now I understand how I create my reality with my thoughts, words, actions and the FEELINGS they invoke in me. Those feelings send out a vibrational signal to the Universe through the electro-magnetic field that connects everything. So, I’ve learned that when I take 100% responsibility for my thoughts, emotions, and feelings, the world around me shifts to reflect that back to me.

I know that I am a Deliberate Creator and what I give my attention GROWS vibrationally, and before long, it comes into physical manifestation. When you complain, you are giving a signal to the Universe that you want MORE of what you are complaining about, and that keeps you feeling stuck, as if nothing ever improves, and in a perpetual state of victimhood.

I have come to learn that if I really want to experience change, not just complain about it, I have to begin thinking and speaking differently. Even if I am complaining about complaining! 😉

That’s because it is impossible
to complain and NOT feel like a victim!

It makes vibrational sense: If you want to let go of your victim mentality, the first step is to stop complaining. It might be easier for you to make a decision to halt your complaints in mid-thought. However, if you hang around a bunch of people who like to complain verbally or in writing (blogs, articles, etc.), before you know it, it may become your habit, too. Once complaining has become an ingrained habit, you may find yourself doing it without even trying!

* * *

That means that if you REALLY want

to release your victim status,

you must FIRST let go of

the habit of complaining!

* * *

You’ve probably heard me say that EVERYTHING that we say is affirming something – either something positive or something negative, depending on the label we give to it. When we complain, we are affirming our status as victims.

It’s up to you, though. No one else is going to think your thoughts, speak your words, or feel your feelings and emotions. When would you like to release the victim status and feel more empowered? That’s the time you will want to commit to letting go of the habit of complaining. It’s never too late to stop complaining and create a new habit.

Now it’s your turn: Do you have a story of how you let go of complaining and the victim status it creates? Share it below so others can benefit!

Letting Go of the Struggle with Affirmations

Personally, I’ve had such GREAT experiences with affirmations that it always SHOCKS me when I hear people saying things like…

Affirmations never work

I hate affirmations

Affirmations are pointless

and the most unbelievable one:
Take a pile of crap, put frosting on top of it…that’s what affirmations are

Yes, I’ve heard every one of those at some point and it always makes me think ….?!? WHAT ?!?

affirmationsHow is it possible that I have such great experiences with affirmations and so many others struggle with it? First, when people affirm regularly that something WON’T WORK for THEM ~ by the Law of Attraction it will never work FOR THEM! Second, I know HOW to create powerful customized affirmations so I do not struggle with affirmations ~ I know they work and I know they are very much worth the effort!

I realized it was time to work with some folks who didn’t believe in the power of affirmations, coach them, show them how to let go of the struggle, and have them talk about their experience.

So, I turned to the great community at Good Vibe University ~ asking who was ready to let go of their struggle with affirmations. Knowing that coaching is helpful for folks who are really struggling, and knowing that the ones who NEED the coaching the most are often the ones affirming that they cannot afford coaching, I decided to donate the coaching for up to five volunteers. Once five volunteers (Sophie, Mitch, Cheryl, Julie and Melissa) had come forward, I sent them to my site to do the free Six Steps to Powerful Affirmations eCourse. From there, I scheduled coaching sessions, and scheduled the call for GVU.

Now, you get to listen in on the conversation where the five volunteers share their answers to these questions:

• What what was your experience with affirmations before?

• What was affirmation coaching like for you? Was it helpful?

• How have the last several weeks been since the affirmation coaching?
• What has changed?

• What advice would do you have now to folks who struggle with affirmations?
