Charmed Business

charmedBusiness books and business schools teach, what they consider to be, practice how-to’s as if that is all a business owner needs to be successful. They completely leave out the discussion about energy except a perfunctory: Stay positive.

Which is practically meaningless unless we have been managing our vibration on a regular basis! Because the energy of our thoughts cascades down to our words, actions, and how others feel around us.

It’s easy to be positive when everything is going well in our business. If we only remember to manage our vibration when we are mired in difficulty, then it’s a lot harder than if we’ve been doing it all along.

Charmed

Recently, I was reminded of this quote by Abraham about living a charmed life:

You would walk around, and you would be saying, whether you say it out loud or you say it to yourself, “I am a wonderful Being. There is nothing that I cannot achieve. The world addresses itself to me always in positive ways. Everything always works out magnificently for me. I live a charmed life. Things are supposed to (and always do) go well for me. Seas part for me. I have the resources of the Universe at my disposal. I live in an environment where I am inspired to a new thought. And as soon as I give birth to it, things align in order to bring me the actualization or the manifestation of it. I am an extension of Source Energy. I am God in a physical body and I am good. And because I am good, good things come to me.
—Abraham-Hicks, Washington, D.C., 10/15/05

Reading it again got me thinking about running a charmed business – one in which all the resources arrive as needed, as if magically called. Engaging the Universal forces to assist you in everything from creating your products and services, developing your marketing and sales processes, attracting ideal clients/customers, and getting the word out about your business.

Think this is far-fetched?

In her book, Hiring the Heavens, author Jean Slatter called on non-physical forces for assistance with writing the book, editing it, and finding the ideal publisher. Slatter specifically asked her dream angelic support team to identify the best publisher for her. Soon, she received guidance to check out New World Library in California. As soon as she did, she knew this was going to be her publisher.

Contrary to what most writing experts would suggest, Slatter sent the manuscript directly to New World Library and they accepted her manuscript and published the book, despite having a policy of only working with agents. They FELT her energy and responded to it!

Our business is an energy stream that is continually responding to how we feel, think and talk about it (to others and ourselves). It is mirroring back to us the energy of our actions, just as our relationships, health, and money are mirrors.

If we’re feeling optimistic and excited, even if we don’t know exactly HOW to take action, we’re more likely to have an outcome that reinforces the vibration of “optimism and excited”.

Likewise if we’re feeling defeated, overwhelmed, and frustrated.

It’s up to us. We must DECIDE how we are going to feel in our business, minute-to-minute, day-to-day…and how others receive the results of our efforts.

That time that my client’s feedback contained exactly the words and phrases I was thinking while working on their project taught me this, too. Other people FEEL the energy with which we create or serve, even if they are not consciously aware of it.

As soon as I realized this, I became more conscious about my own energy while taking actions in my business. I asked for guidance to meet or exceed my client’s expectations…even expectations the client wasn’t even aware of having! I received and took action on the guidance, and clients raved!

Sure, there could be days when we have to consciously remind ourselves, or even cut ourselves some slack. But, the tumultuous waves of those difficult days are a lot easier to surf if we’ve been practicing vibration management every day.

We Are the Ones

It’s up to us to start seeing/feeling/knowing our business as charmed, magical, thriving entity with every resource available at its disposal. When vendors are needed, they reveal themselves. When additional funding or business loans are needed, we identify an ideal source. When we are ready for more clients/customers, they hear our energetic call. When we know our business is providing a needed product or service while making the world a better place, we will see that ‘reality’ mirrored back to us.

Imagine how your business would respond if this was how you thought and felt about it…
“My business is magical, and everything we do makes the world a better place! The world addresses itself to my business always in positive ways. Everything always works out magnificently for my clients, my vendors, and my business, creating fabulous and fun win-win-win experiences for all involved!

I run a charmed business! Day-to-day business details are supposed to (and always do) go well. Seas part for my business success. My magical business has the resources of the Universe at its disposal. As soon as I encounter inspired thoughts and feelings about my business, things align in order to actualize or the manifest it in my magical business. My business is inspiring, uplifting, and connecting me moment-to-moment with the inspiration and resources of Source Energy. I love my charmed business!”

What I’d love to know is…how are you choosing to see the magic in your business?

Getting Out of the “How” Business

how - letting go[This article was previously published on AffirmingSpirit.com. It has been revised and updated for the enjoyment of blog-readers.]

Recently, I have written about embracing change, the power of decision, and believing in what’s possible as tools for creating powerful positive change in your life. Once you open the door to possibilities, your intuitive guidance will begin to show you options. Here is when it is critical to move past the next trap: Wanting to control “how” everything manifests.

Paralyzed by the need to control or see exactly how their wish will materialize, many folks cease taking any action. They need to know exactly how, from start to finish, they will accomplish their goal. The lack of knowing how becomes an excuse never to even begin taking action toward their desired goal. Since a clear solution does not seem available, or viable, they then conclude that their goal is simply not possible. Many goals die a quiet death in this trap.

The truth is “how” your goal manifests is not up to you…at all. That’s the job of the Universe that is orchestrating all beyond your comprehension. It’s your job to sift through all your experiences to decide what it is you really want to experience, and which of those you are really going to pursue, put yourself into the feeling of it as if it’s already manifested…AND LET GO! ‘How’ it comes about is truly the “domain of the Universe” as Mike Dooley says in the original version of The Secret DVD.

In fact, failure to let go sets us up for a vicious cycle. The more we worry about, and try to control, “how” our desires manifest, the more we are adding to the very resistance that keeps those goals at bay. Then, with proof that nothing is working, you have yet another excuse to conclude that the goal was an impossible dream.

If you’ve decided to become a conscious creator, you need to get out of the ‘how’ business. When we let go of the need to control exactly how our desires show up, we release the self-imposed limits on the possible ways our desires can manifest. As humans beings, we have a limited view of what can be accomplished, always based on what we are aware of that has already been done. Getting away from the need to know how is what is meant by “getting out of your own way”.

There’s no question that we DO benefit from pure, positive passion on your way to experience your desired goal, and the persistence to stay focused on the outcome regardless of any naysayers. That said, sometimes the very passion that drives us can cause us to want to know “how”. Successful people the world over know that you do not need to know “how” you will accomplish your goal in order to succeed. They realize that passion for the outcome and trust in the process are the big keys to successful conscious creating.

Jerry Hicks tells a story of how he and Esther had decided they wanted to take the Abraham materials to a wider audience. They happily told others about this, and when people asked how they were going to do it, they just said something to the effect of, “We don’t know right now, but we know the way will be shown.” Then, out of the (seeming) blue, Wayne Dyer and Christiane Northrup, M.D. contacted them to say how much they loved their materials and asking how they could help. Other notable authors and media people stepped forward to do the same. Louise Hay offered to publish their books to a wider audience. They were contacted by Rhonda Byrne to make The Secret movie (original version), which led to them creating their own movies and participating in Louise Hay’s You Can Heal Your Life. Along the way, Oprah called to interview them on her XM 156 Radio show.

All this happened for them because they put their desire out to the listening Universe and spent no time trying to second-guess the energy that creates worlds. They got out of their own way. Esther and Jerry considered what they wanted, focused on that, and trusted that it would show up for them…and it did! You wouldn’t know about all of their books, movies, or YouTube videos if this hadn’t happened for them.

The “Needing-to-Know-How” Addiction
Some people have been demanding to know how for so long that they’ve become addicted to needing to know, not to mention tallying up failures of past goals that never saw the light of day.

The addiction to knowing coupled with the lack of knowing keeps them stuck, in a perpetual (and emotionally exhausting) tug of war.

At the root of needing to know how your goal will manifest is a lack of trust in the energy that creates worlds, the one single source of all we perceive as humans: The Universal Energy field, sometimes known as Source Energy, Divine Source, All that Is, or God. Quantum Physicists have identified this energy field that permeates everything that we perceive with our senses, and have determined that this field of energy responds to and is affected by our thoughts and feelings.

Quantum Physicist Fred Alan Wolfe, PhD in the movie, The Secret, said,“Quantum Physics really begins to point to this discovery. It says that you can’t have the Universe without the mind entering into it.” He goes on to explain, The mind is actually shaping the very thing that is being perceived. Experiments with particles have shown them responding as soon as particles are being observed.

Whether you view this ever-present energy field in a religious, spiritual, or a scientific way, the fact still remains: The energy that permeates all things in the universe is constantly responding to our thoughts and feelings. If you trust this, then you will find it easier to let go of the ‘how’ and let this energy source assist you. It will respond to your trust by providing your deepest heart-felt desires.

If you do not trust this source, by virtue of your lack of trust, it will reflect back to you proof that you cannot trust it. The Law of Attraction ensures that whatever we believe is a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Practice Shifting and Cultivating
So, what do you do if you are addicted to needing to know ‘how’ before you proceed? Start by practicing shifting your thinking and attitudes, and cultivate trust.

• Cultivating trust is like building muscles. Develop your trust muscle so you can easily imagine yourself living the outcome you desire. Spend a few minutes each day practicing— visualizing (see, feel, know) yourself living the outcome of the goal and noticing how it feels for you.

For example, if you want a good parking spot, imagine yourself driving to the location, finding the perfect spot and pulling right in without waiting.

Notice how you feel when you are visualizing (seeing, feeling, knowing) this. Feel yourself physically there in your visualization. Then, let it go and continue with your day. Resist the temptation to get into too much mental detail because that will lead you to ask ‘how’. Instead, focus on the feeling you want and are expecting to experience. Abraham refers to this technique as pre-paving a future experience. As you find yourself stepping into a future that matches your visualization (seeing, feeling, knowing), you know it’s not a coincidence.

• Start with smaller goals until you begin to trust that Universal Energy is constantly responding to meet your requests. We tend to be less attached to emotionally to smaller goals, so use that to it’s advantage if you are just starting out. As your trust deepens, you will find it easier to begin visualizing and feeling the outcome of much larger goals. Soon, you will find yourself trusting and knowing that everything you desire will manifest for you quickly and efficiently.

• Release emotional attachment to the outcome. I realize that the more emotionally attached we are to a certain outcome, the harder it can be to let go and trust. However, if you channel that emotion away from attachment and toward your visualization, you’ll notice something remarkable. The more emotion invested in the visualization, rather than the attachment, the more you will feel as if you are already living the desire you seek.

At that point, it’s only a matter of time for it to manifest. The creation process is well underway, and ironically, you are likely to feel less attached to the final outcome because you already have the satisfaction of feeling as if you are living that reality. And that makes you, and your goal, very attractive!

Feel the Outcome as Reality
How to do this? Let me share a personal experience from my own business.

One day I realized that a client had not paid a large project invoice by the milestone date. I called their accounting department to find out when payment would be made and was told they would “pay it when they got around to paying it.” I was incensed that this client corporation had me working around the clock and was extremely demanding, but was unwilling to pay their invoices on time. Soon, I found myself arguing with their Accounts Payable rep and heard my inner voice say, “Stop. Arguing is not helping.” I forced myself to end the conversation and hang up the phone, and needless to say—I was not in a very good mood!

Realizing that my energy was so negative that I would only attract similar energy by staying there, I immediately left my office. I sought out my kitty cat who always soothed me and lifted my energy. As I petted my kitty, I felt my heart warm and completely forget why I was mad in the first place. I stayed in that loving energy for a while, as it felt so good, and then began to think about the ideal outcome for the situation. All drama aside, the ideal outcome was to have possession of the client payment and deposit it into the bank.

So, I imagined myself holding the check, walking into the bank to make the deposit. I stayed with that visualization until it felt real to me. Then, I went back to petting my sweet kitty who was soaking up all the love.

Eventually, I made it back into my office and went back to work. I had let go of the outcome and trusted that what I visualized would show up. About three hours later, I received a call that the check was in the company’s lobby for me to pick up. It was not long before I was holding that check, walking into my bank to make the deposit just as I had visualized a few hours before!!!

Was it totally easy for me to get out of the “how” and shift my anger toward more productive visualization? It is easier now than it would have been 10 years ago, but it wasn’t totally easy, and frankly I needed the help of my furry friend to truly shift my energy to a higher vibration. (Furry friends are one of our greatest gifts!)

Could I have gotten there on my own? Probably, but not as quickly. If a kitty wasn’t present, I could have turned on some good music and danced, or put my attention on someone who always lifts my spirits. While it wasn’t easy, it was doable…and the more I do it, the easier it becomes.

In my example above, as I stepped out of the ‘how’ and focused on the outcome I desired, I gave the universe permission to fulfill my request in the fastest, most efficient way possible. I was then free to follow intuitve guidance. Jack Canfield has equated this to driving from NY to California at night with your headlights on, seeing only 200 feet ahead of you at any time, trusting that the road will take you to your final destination.

Have you been paralyzed to take action because you first needed to know how you would accomplish your goal? What has helped you to get out of your own way? Share your experiences with us below, in comments…

How to Soften Contrast

Abe Rampage

At some point in the process of honing Deliberate Creation skills, someone will get mired in their contrast and ask “how do I get rid of contrast?”. Contrast is part of the experience of living in duality. So until you move on to another dimension without duality, Deliberate Creators are called to use their skills deliberately.

While I have broached the subject that ‘everything is a blessing’ many times, now more than ever this message is important to truly embody. The time for philosophizing is over. Now it’s time to LIVE what you have learned and continue to learn.

I was watching this video the other day, of Abraham (channeled by Esther Hicks) speaking to a group in California in February 2013, making this point beautifully (as usual). If you feel inspired to watch this video a few times or meditate to it in order to “feel the truth of it”, then do so. Follow what feels good to you as you watch this…

We are all connected energetically to each other through Source. When we make an enemy of any person or experience, we are also making an enemy of ourselves which creates a no-win situation.

Instead, BLESS the people or situations for what they are showing you…and while understanding they are helping you get clear about what matters to you, soften your attitude toward contrast. The contrast is less of an issue than your response to it, as your response has the power to hold you in that contrast.

When you bless the contrast, it will not only help you move through the contrast more quickly and smoothly, it is also a form of self-love. You are consciously acknowledging and finding value in another aspect of yourself. As you stop resisting what you don’t like, but rather use the information it provides to focus on what your preferences, then by the Law of Attraction the contrast must shift vibrationally.

You are the tuning fork to which the Universe is responding. What vibration are you transmitting? Soften your response to contrast, shift your vibrational tune, and the response from the Universe must shift as well.

In this video, Abraham rampages appreciation for life. From this rampage of appreciation emerges many positive affirmations in the video, including this one:

Everything affirmation

Have You Been Stoking the ‘Need’?

Are you Stoking the NEEDYears ago, I knew someone who used to call me every few hours insisting that she ‘needed me’ to solve the crisis-of-the-moment. In reality, none of these crises actually existed, except in this person’s mind. Despite being fully capable of handling these crises herself, she had convinced herself that I was the *only* person who could help.

Initially, I spent copious time patiently reassuring her and answering her same questions over and over and over. Talking to her positively, encouraging her to see the bigger picture. Meanwhile, I kept wondering WHY this particular person constantly  calling with dramatic stories of needing rescue.

Then, it dawned on me.

This was a common pattern for this gal. Despite being fully qualified in many ways, she had convinced herself that she wasn’t…and that she needed others to rescue her…everyday! She was clearly carrying a story around that must have been something like:

OH, NO…I don’t think I can handle this. This is too hard! I’m not capable or smart enough to figure this out. I don’t want to be alone with this [fill in the blank problem] because there’s NO WAY I can figure it out myself. Someone else has to help me! OMG – HELP! CRISIS! DISASTER LOOMS…HELP…HELP!!!

While she unconsciously stoked the feelings of urgency, crisis, lack and ‘need’ within herself,  it was manifesting in her outer world…or, rather it appeared to her as manifesting. To me, she seemed to be anticipating problems more than actually experiencing them. Law of Attraction was lining her up with experiences that would make her right.  How we show up in the world reflects our self-talk and deepest inner beliefs.

As I type this, and reflect back on this time in my life, this person was also a mirror for me to see my own ‘need to rescue’. Since like vibrations cohere, Law of Attraction was responding to my need by lining me up with someone who needed to be rescued.

In the beginning, I was happy to be of assistance. But over time, it was no longer fun for me to interact with this friend only in this way. In fact, it was downright exhausting and it was not a functional friendship since I was only called to put out fires, not to relate as a friend.

Do you recognize yourself in either of these examples?

If you like this experience, by all means, keep creating it! If you don’t then in order for Law of Attraction to deliver something different, you have to be willing to shift your energy. That sounds tricky, but it’s not as difficult as you might think.

First, start telling a different story. Even if it’s just a softer version of the story you’ve been telling yourself, begin anew. This friend might have started by shifting her self-talk to something like, I usually like to have help, but I am a capable adult…I wonder how much of this I can resolve on my own. If I can’t figure it out by [date], then I will ask around. Then, taking any actions that she felt guided to take that aligned with the new story.

If telling the new story feels too hard, or brings up lower energies of fear, worry, and doubt, it can be helpful to use a tool like EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) to address those feelings and begin to clear them before you start telling a new story.

The new story I actually told myself to shift out of this experience was I appreciate and cultivate healthy, functional friendships with kind people who are capable and helpful. Abraham has said, when we shift our own energy, our experience must shift in response. In fact, other people may meet us in the new vibration, or they may vibrate right out of our experience. In this particular situation, the person seemed to magically stop calling me, and eventually we lost touch. As I let go of the ‘need to rescue’, this person may have lost the need for help or may have connected with someone else who ‘needed to rescue’.

Second, remember times in your past when you exhibited capability. Chances are, you have many, but may not give them much mental attention. Change that now…close your eyes, remember those times, and feel how it feels in your body. Remember this feeling so you can call it up when feeling capable is desired.

Third, look without attachment for evidence that your new story is materializing. In other words, release attachment but allow the evidence to reveal itself to you.

Finally, practice. The next time you are feeling needy, remember this is a golden opportunity to practice a new vibration. Practice makes perfect, so remember the new story and implement it. Call up the memories from the past, and remember the evidence all around you.

Moment-to-Moment Commitment

A fellow Good Vibe University member shared an Abraham video today and that reminded me reminded me of the commitment I have long-since made to Deliberate Creation…

You have control over the direction of your thought. And the way you feel is about the direction of your thought. You have the ability to focus in ways that you have not exercised. Too many people are dependent on the behavior of too many others which you can’t control. Then it puts you in this uncomfortable position of needing to be true control freaks in order to feel good!

when you get it, when you decide early on or as soon as you can, that you’re going to stop trying to control the uncontrollable, which is everything that everybody else is doing…stop trying to control the uncontrollable and control the only ting you CAN control, which is your relationship with your Vortex!

Let Law of Attraction do all the controlling. And you just adjust your vibration.

You create a better world ONLY from inside the Vortex!

I don’t just teach about deliberate creation and processes like affirmations, visualization, and meditation – I live it and I practice. I recognize it is my choice. Every day. Every moment. Even when I thrash around in resistance, I know that there is a choice to be made.

Sometimes it’s easy to make the choice to think better-feeling thoughts, and I do. Sometimes it’s hard to make that choice, and I yet I still do. Sometimes I am so off-center vibrationally that it takes time for me to right myself before I am ABLE to make a better choice. As soon as I can, I usually do…because it’s part of my commitment to the practice of Deliberate Creation. Yes, focusing takes effort—although not as much effort as thrashing around in resistance.

How EASY we make the moment-to-moment choices to feel better has more to do with our own thoughts, ego, and willingness to see life from a different perspective. Get really good at questioning your thoughts regularly. Recognize your stories and weed out the ones that don’t serve you. Be willing to let go of what isn’t working in favor of what does work for you. (Sometimes, your only guide to what is working better is ‘what feels better right now’.) For me, making that commitment and practicing it has made it easier to get out of my own way.

Your turn —what do you do to get out of your own way and have you made the commitment to Deliberate Creation? If you haven’t made that commitment, are you willing to consider it?

Turning My Thoughts Around

You’ve probably heard it before, and know from your own experience: It’s easy to be calm and positively focused when all is going well. The REAL TEST is how you handle life in the face of major emotional upheavals.

Abraham uses the term “contrast” for any experience that is different from what we would choose to experience. Like an artist placing a dark color next to a lighter color creates visual contrast, the difference between experiences we want and those we don’t want creates emotional contrast. This past week, I had some major emotional contrast that gave me an opportunity to learn and grow.

Last Sunday night, I was in my home office working when I heard blood-curdling howling from my sweet kitty, Thelma. I raced to find her in my son’s room (she never goes in there), behind the door, her body shaking and unable to move or stand. As soon as I saw her, I realized that my darling Thelma – the caregiver kitty and loveball extraordinaire – was preparing to transition into non-physical energy. (That’s metaphysical-speak …Abraham just calls it “croaking” because they say there is no death, only energetic transformation.)

Everyone who knows me, knows that I truly adore kitties, and especially the bonded pair I adopted in early 2008 (Thelma and Louise). Thelma had become my personal shadow and furry office receptionist. She rarely left my side, showing such unconditional love and devotion that I sometimes wondered if she thought she was human!

So, when I saw her Sunday night, I realized just how much I was NOT ready to see her leave physical form!!! Seeing her like this was heartbreaking. I was crying and had to keep reminding myself: This was HER process, not mine. My job was to love her and honor her through that process.

The next morning, I made preparations to take Thelma to the Humane Society. Once I had her loaded in her carrier, sitting safely in the back seat, I began the drive to the new facility on the other side of South Bay.

What happened next really surprised me: As I drove, one negative thought after another piled into my mind. This is not normal for me. Usually, when a thought arises that fills me with negative emotion, I know it is an indicator to shift my thinking and get clear about what I really want. Once I do, I milk those better-feeling thoughts until they quickly multiply and I am feeling much better.

Monday was different. Instead of milking positive thoughts, I had been unconsciously milking NEGATIVE THOUGHTS about losing this precious kitty. I dearly wanted Thelma to LIVE, without pain or discomfort, but that option was not present. Every stop light, I had to remind myself that this was HER process – and if she was ready to go – it was not my place to keep her stuck in her painful, paralyzed body.

No matter how I looked at it, this was MAJOR CONTRAST for me:

Seeing Thelma immobilized and in pain = CONTRAST

Thinking of losing Thelma = CONTRAST

As I drove my precious Thelma to the Humane Society on Monday, my dominant thoughts were about losing her, and not having her soft, furry body cuddled up with me, purring and happy to be with me. The more I milked these thoughts, the harder I cried and the worse I felt. At times, I could barely see the road in front of me because of the tears.

Then I realized: In my deep sadness and milking negative thoughts, I had taken a wrong turn and was heading in the wrong direction. Both literally…and emotionally!

This sudden realization snapped me out of my cycle of negative thinking. I realized I had to quickly compose myself and get going in the right direction. But, when you are that far down the negative rabbit hole, how do you quickly excavate yourself and start feeling better? That’s when my coaching skills kicked in. I remembered that I do have control over the thoughts I choose to think. For me the key was…

Get back in the present moment by Focusing ONLY on what I know is true *right now*!

Moment-by-moment, I shifted my focus only to what I knew to be true….

I am driving in the wrong direction and need to turn around.

I hear Thelma is meowing in her carrier.

I am turning the car around.

I am now driving in the right direction.

I am not sure where I am, so I will ask directions.

(Stopped and got directions.)

I am going in the right direction now.

I am at the Humane Society’s parking lot wondering which entrance to use.

I see a vet tech and ask about the entrances, and go in the one she recommends.

I am carrying Thelma inside.

I am speaking with the staff and carrying Thelma down the hall…

As I focused only on the present, my energy shifted immediately and I was able to compose myself. I was calm and focused, able to give my full attention to each task. I still cried, but I wasn’t feeling overwhelmed.

Thelma passed peacefully of natural causes just after being given the anesthesia. It was her time to go. This was her process and her timing, and I was at peace being present with her at that sacred moment of transition.

Focusing only on the present moment, second to second, helped me quickly shift out of the negative cycling and remain calm and present when it really mattered.

As I drove home, I realized that thinking about losing a beloved pet is just one sad thought. If I had allowed myself to be present with that one thought, it would have been enough. That sad thought didn’t need my unconscious help to become 10 – 15 – or 20 sad thoughts all at one time. I came away from this experience realizing that I have the power to remain calm and focused in the midst of major contrast – and all I have to do is DECIDE to be fully present and focus only on what I know to be true.

Have you had an experience like this? How do you turn your thoughts around in the red-hot moment of contrast?

Appreciating You this Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone celebrating today in the United States!

When my son was young, I use to keep him busy while I cooked dinner for Thanksgiving by asking him to write down a list of what he most appreciated in his life. I’d also make my own list. Then, during the Thanksgiving meal, we’d each read from our respective lists. It was a sure vibe-lifter!

As you might imagine, when I first asked him to do this, my son was not thrilled. He’d start the task with the usual irritation and disbelief that Mom asked him to do what he perceived initially as *homework* on his day off of school. Also not surprisingly, as the day wore on and his list grew longer, he got happier and more appreciative. The more he looked to appreciate, the more he found. Initially struggling to come up with ten items, he’d easily come up with 100!

At the dinner table, my son beamed with joy in sharing each item on the list which included family, friends, pet, favorite toys and cherished experiences. Making lists of appreciation, or Rampages of Appreciation, as Abraham-Hicks calls them, is a fantastic way to shift your energy!

You may think that making the lists in your head is enough, but there is power in writing them down and seeing that list grow! I challenge you to begin writing your lists down, in a notebook or on paper you put in a binder, remaining open to add to your lists as time goes on and you become more aware of your deep appreciation.

Write down what you most appreciate about your current life, relationships, career,
and health. If you are self-employed, write what you most appreciate about your
business, your clients, your vendors, and your community.

And by all means, don’t just stop listing what you are happy about now. Feel free to list what you appreciate coming into your future experiences, too!

Many people have shared with me that they have a gratitude journal. I’ve had those in the past, but often gratitude lists began to feel more like *shoulds* than true appreciation. When I focus on appreciation, it’s a much lighter, more loving energy for me.

For a long time, I couldn’t understand why gratitude didn’t always feel good to me. Then, Abraham-Hicks shared this workshop excerpt about the difference between an attitude of gratitude versus the emotion of appreciation. That’s when I realized why the latter had been so much more powerful for me.

If you haven’t listened to this, it’s worth a few minutes to understand the distinction for yourself:

Once you have your list, keep it handy. Many of the items and experiences listed will likely qualify for your personal Joy List you can turn to whenever you are ripe to shift your energy to a better-feeling place. As you live your life from an ever-more-positive place, the Universe mirrors that energy back to you so you’ll have more and more and more to appreciate showing up for you!

This Thanksgiving, I truly appreciate all of you who subscribe to the AffirmingSpirit mailing list and blog, who read, share, comment and and interact with me all year long. Thank you for joining me in this journey! May you be blessed today, and everyday, with an abundance of joy and appreciation!

Wisdom of the Doughnut

I posted this to GoodVibeUniversity’s private forum, and decided to also share it here:

I’m totally appreciating and loving the searchability of the internet right now. 😀

My Dad, who transitioned when I was 17 yrs old, and when he was just 56, was an optimist and a big-time coffee drinker. I’ve been accused of being an optimist myself. 😉

Recently, one of Abraham’s quotes tickled my brain about one of my Dad’s favorite sayings. I was having trouble remembering all of it, but I knew it contained the words, “Keep your eye upon…” and had a pithy point about focusing on *what you want, not the lack of it*.

So, I Googled the quote term I could remember…

And it turns out the quote is from a poem called, “The Optimist’s Creed” which pre-dates the Mayflower! 😯

From reading this, I saw exactly what my Dad used to say: Keep your eye upon the doughnut and NOT upon the hole. 😀

It comes from these two poems, most directly the second one:
The Mayflower coffee and donut shops (1930s-1970s) used this “Optimist’s Creed” as its motto. The poem pre-dates the Mayflower.

15 April 1904, New York Sun, pg. 6, col. 5:
Their Points of View.
‘Twixt optimist and pessimist
The difference is droll;
The optimist the doughnut sees –
The pessimist the hole.

13 January 1929, Charleston (WV) Daily Mail, pg. 6, col. 6:
Sign in Quarrier street restaurant. Advice for those who drink coffee and eat “sinkers.”

“As you ramble through Life, Brother,
Whatever be your goal.
Keep your eye upon the doughnut,
And not upon the hole.

😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀

Did you ever think there was such wisdom in doughnuts? Leave it to optimists to see the incredible value of doughnuts (and everything else). 😉

Do you have some optimistic quotes that you’d like to share with us?
