Effective Solopreneur: Closing the Door on Success

closed_dreamHave you been closing the door on your dreams of success?

Most of you understand that everything that exists in physical form first started out in vibrational form, as a thought.

For instance, someone first *thought* about the computer display you are reading this post on before it came into physical form.

In the same way, someone received a vibrational impression of the keyboard I’m typing this on, and translated that thought into specifications that were given to a manufacturer to create. The manufacturer then created the keyboard on equipment that was once just a thought in someone’s mind.

Your dreams and ideas as a successful solopreneur also started as vibrational impressions that you chose to remember, write down, and flesh out into products and services you offer your clientele.

I don’t know any business owner who consciously starts out saying, “I want to create something that will not sell, that will cost more than it earns, and that will be a waste time and money for any of the people who do buy it.”

And yet, that’s the outcome that many people are experiencing. Why would that be? Because many people are unconsciously closing the doors on their own success before it has a chance to move from vibrational form into physical form.

Quantum physics has shown that the Universe is composed of more energy than solid, physical matter. Way more! The more scientists look deep into matter to find what it is made of, the less physical stuff they find and the more energy they reveal. Furthermore, they’ve learned that what we perceive as empty space is really untapped potential energy awaiting our conscious attention. Experiments have repeatedly shown that this energy responds to our conscious attention and that there is unlimited potential in every aspect of this energy. Every quantum possibility already exists, and the one that comes into physical form is the one we have given the most attention.

The difference between a financial depression and financial prosperity depends on which one we give the most attention.

The difference between a business failing and a business thriving depends on which one we give the most attention.

The difference between begging for clients and a waiting list of clients depends on which one we give the most attention.

Our attention includes our intentions, our attitudes, the stories we tell ourselves and others, and the feelings these thoughts, beliefs and emotions evoke. When you speak about your dreams and your business in ways that uplift you, your emotion is telling you that you are in alignment with the deeper part of yourself…the Source Energy that is the basis of everything we perceive with our senses.

When you speak about your dreams and your business in ways that saddens and depresses you, your emotion is telling you that you are NOT in alignment with the deeper part of yourself. You are, in effect, shutting down that quantum possibility before the vibration every has a chance to make it into physical form. That means, every time you repeatedly give your attention to aspects of your life or business that upset you, worry you, or cause you to feel bad, you are essentially closing the vibrational door on your own success. You are the one sabotaging your own potential!

You can blame the economy, or a corporation, or the government, or any host of others for your failures. But if you want to turn the tide, you’ll have to begin by taking responsibility for your success.

Every time you say you want to do something, but you can’t, you have just CLOSED the door on that quantum possibility! It will never open again, until you change the thoughts, stories, and emotions related to that idea. The bottom line is: You are the only one who can control your thoughts, and when you focus on what upsets, worries, depresses, or angers you, you are pre-paving your future with that same energy.

Think about that for a moment. If you don’t like what you are currently experiencing, how much do you think you’ll like more of the same in the future?!?

If you want to see your business succeed, then you must first make a commitment to keep your vibrational doors open. That commitment includes being conscious where you give your attention. It includes stopping the behavior, thoughts, beliefs and emotions that brought you to this point. It also includes not getting involved in other people’s dramas.

It’s one thing to allow others to think or believe whatever they choose, and wish them well, and another to feel it’s your responsiblity to make everyone think like you. You must stay focused on the thoughts, beliefs, and emotions that support your success and let others find their own paths.

If you are unwilling to make that energetic commitment, you have just closed the door on your dream, behind the vault of your subconscious mind. Buried there, your subconsious mind will block attempts to access any kind of success. It will seem like every effort you make is failing, no matter what you do, nothing is working. But who was the one who closed the door?!?

The good news is that you can begin now unlocking your success.

Are you willing to make the commitment to your own success?

What are you willing to do to open the vibrational doors to your dreams and keep them open?

Relishing the Renewal

As I wrote about in my February 2010 post, Aligning with Your Natural Creativity Cycles, once we have completed a large project, it’s not uncommon to desire a time for rest and relaxation. This is a normal part of the creativity cycle, and if we don’t allow ourselves this time, we often create illness or some other *road block* to provide it to us.

Now that I have completed the online portion of my latest project, a 7 part call series for small businesses entitled, Harnessing Your True Power: What to do BEFORE you take action!, I literally feel like I just gave birth to a HUGE baby with a 2 month-long labor!!!

By the way…

If you wonder why people charge for the audios and transcripts from these kind of series, take my word for it: It’s a HUGE undertaking, and most people wouldn’t do it in the first place if they realized it upfront. This is from someone who simply ADORED interviewing the experts and talking about this subject. That part, though adored, was only a fraction of the work involved! I worked nearly 16 hours a day, 7 days a week, for 60 days conceiving, creating, planning, preparing, and managing every detail of this series…and there were even more people behind the scenes helping *me*!

When you give birth to a human baby, the body’s hormones fill the mother with a myriad of conflicting emotions. I’m finding myself feeling similar conflicting emotions, sans the hormones. Part of me is ELATED to have this baby born, and  *out in the world* so I tell everyone about it, while another part of me…just wants to relax and sleep.

I recognize the latter emotions as a sign that I have completed the major creation phase of this project, and my mind/body, body/mind is ready to take a breather. I’ve learned to give myself this respit…it pays off! I stay healthy while I’m relaxing, and the next project benefits immensely. Honoring this part of me is not only good self-care, it’s good self-love. When we treat ourselves kindly, the universe mirrors that back to us in many ways.

While the major creative part of this project is over for me, I won’t consider myself *done* until the final transcripts have been provided to me, I do my magic-makeover on them, and they –along with the final audios– everything is officially delivered to all the folks who purchased the entire call series.

Which reminds me…

I also want to personally thank everyone who helped me get to this point, including all the experts who happily gave their time and promoted these calls, and my behind-the-scenes team that helped me with transcripts.

I especially want to thank those who purchased the entire call series before even a single call was available (talk about TRUST in what I’m about and what I offer!!!) and those who bought after listening to the calls…realizing this series was worth purchasing. Thank you!

Thank you for joining me on this incredible journey!

Thank you for summoning this information through me!

Thank you for inspiring this great resource!

Thank you for listening and sharing these calls!

Thank you for purchasing the series!

Thank you, Thank You, THANK YOU!

Once the orders are fulfilled, then, I will truly be ready to relish the renewal phase and…relax!

To get to that place of fully relaxing into renewal, I have a *secret*.

Relaxation CoachFortunately for me, I am working with two very special relaxation coaches who know me well…who also happen to be very furry and cuddly. They are intent on ensuring that I learn the proper way of fully, and deeply relaxing. In fact, they specialize in this and are equipped to pin me down, if need be!

If you are self-employed, I highly recommend working with such specialized coaches. If you aren’t so lucky to have your own relaxation coaches, I know your local shelter will be happy to *hook you up* with some! Your body and your business WILL thank you: Seriously, I’m not sure I can ever convey the power of this kind of coaching, whether it’s 1:1 or 2:1 or 3:1 or … OK, your city probably has limits, so check on those first.

So, now that I’ve shared this secret with you, if you don’t hear from me for a little while, you’ll know my relaxation coaches are showing me how it’s done! =^..^=

Cultivating a Sense of Wonder

The subconscious mind is quite remarkable. Besides being at our beck-and-call 24/7, it doesn’t know time (past, present, or future), and it’s always looking for answers…even while we sleep!

If you are dwelling on a past problem, the subconscious doesn’t know it happened in the past, and begins responding  AS IF you are living that same problem in this moment.

If you are worrying about a future potential problem, the subconscious again responds AS IF it’s happening now.

When you ask, “why am I having all these problems?”, the subconscious begins seeking the answer to that question by looking for problems. So, the questions we ask ourselves become very important!

Likewise, if you dwell on exciting and fun possibilities in your life, the subconscious will play with that, too! It will look for even more possibilities, and expand on the ones we’ve already discovered. Asking supportive questions can shift your energy and the way you experience the world.

When you are asking questions that support you, the subconscious mind will find a way to support you in return. That’s why sayings like “If there is a will, there’s a way” holds such a powerful truth.

Prolific author, speaker and creativity coach, Eric Maisel, suggests we take advantage of this 24/7 *service* offered by the subconscious mind by consciously cultivating a sense of wonder. We do this by wondering openly, asking open-ended questions the subconscious can begin seeking answers to those questions.

You can really have a lot of fun with this, and it’s quite the vibe-lifter:

“I wonder how all my perfect opportunities & people are finding me so easily?”

“I wonder why I am having so much fun and smiling so much?”

“I wonder why my life feels so easy and joyful?”

“I wonder how the Universe is expanding my dreams into reality right now?”

“I wonder why my life keeps getting better and better?”

This evening, I began tweeting the questions above and it immediately caught the attention of people who wanted a reason to smile and feel good.

Your turn…how will you cultivate wonder?

Renew Your Vision

illustration by Nancy Barry-JanssonThe other day I was watching a video where they mentioned how we can become accustomed to the sights and smells in our home, and not notice them at all whereas a stranger would notice them immediately. This is why we can daily walk past, or over piles, of paperwork to be filed, dirty clothes waiting to be laundered, and books waiting to be finished…never remembering or making time to deal with them. Or why we do not notice the smell of last night’s dinner lingering or the odor of our beloved pets. We can become accustomed and block it out of our everyday attention, but it’s still lurking as an energy drain beneath our conscious attention (or lack thereof) ~ and it feeds our self-image.

One of my clients is an executive business coach who recently recounted an experience at one of his corporate client’s offices. Upon walking into the environment, he began *seeing* obvious issues of which his client seemed oblivious. When he made a suggestion to them, they were astonished at what a good idea it was…and how they hadn’t noticed the issue before he pointed it out!

When he was sharing this story, my first thought was how easy it is to overlook our own problems, issues, and distractions. One of the many benefits of having a mentor or coach is that they can immediately *see* what’s not working for us, what’s sticking out, and what’s blocking our progress. When they point it out, we can finally *see* the issues and do something about them!

This also got me wondering: What have we stopped seeing in our own business, gotten so used to working around or dealing with, that we no longer *see* it?

If a stranger walked into your home or business today, what might they see and immediately see is not working for you?

Take a walk around your home, office, yard, and check out your car…really take notice as if you are seeing it with renewed vision. Does your home, office, yard, and car support the person you are choosing to be? If so, how…and if not, what would be good to change right now? Decluttering? Re-organizing? Shifting priorities?

TIP: If there is a lot to do, break it down into smaller steps. As you see yourself taking actions to make your environment supportive, your subconscious receives the message: I am ready grow. I am ready to become an even better version of myself.

Just as we can become accustomed to physical environments, we can become accustomed to our own emotions. In fact, as we age, our emotions narrow to the ones most often used: Happy people get happier, angry people get angrier, sad people get more sad, and so on. Some might call this Law of Attraction in action, but here is a bio-chemical reason for this: The brain regularly cleans house of unnecessary/unused receptors and chemicals, and makes more receptors to handle the common chemicals.

What emotions would you like to be experiencing more often? Does your current environment (physical and emotional) support you? How can you set up your current environment (physical and emotional) to support you? Who are the people you’d like to spend more time with?

When you renew your vision of yourself and set up your physical and emotional environment to support you, the Universe is only too happy to mirror that vision back to you!

Tell me…what is your renewed vision showing you? Share it in the comments below or tell us how you have done this in the past.

Effective Solopreneur: Tending the Inner Garden

Personal growth benefits you personally, but are you aware how much personal growth and inner healing grows and heals your business?illustration by Nancy Barry-Jansson

Everything on this planet is vibrational in nature, including your life and your business. Form follows vibration, because everything is first conceived vibrationally before it comes into physical being. Even our senses are vibrational interpreters.

Everything. The chair you are sitting in. The body you are inhabiting. The life you are living and the business you are growing. Everything is vibrational!

So, it makes sense on all levels that a business grown from a healthy, fertile and strong foundation creates a legacy that continually feeds that enterprise.

Others around us sense the energy from which we create and serve. Customers and clients are either attracted or repelled by that energy.

When you take the time to go inward, hear your own heartsong, know the gifts you offer the world, and understand your intrinsic value, your life and business benefit! That’s tending the inner garden so that you reap a physical reward that’s beautiful to behold.

Your intuition is always serving you, and guiding you to the best solutions. Are you paying attention? When you listen to and act on your intuitive guidance, your business thrives. When you question or doubt your guidance, ask countless others for their opinions, and fight what feels good because it seems too easy, your business suffers. And so do you!

Tend your inner garden by scheduling regular time for…

* Meditation and quiet time

* Physical exercise that’s fun

* Affirmations that uplift you

* Visualizations that thrill you

* Rest, relaxation, and fun that renews you

* BEing the essence of your intentions daily

* Time with uplifting people and experiences

Now it’s your turn to share what you do to tend your inner garden!
Share with me how you have set up your life and business in a way that serves you and your clients…

Effective Solopreneur: Getting Personal with Your Business

Getting Personal with BusinessWhen I was a kid, one of the most common phrases I heard was, “It’s not personal, it’s business!” Of course, like any kid, I soaked up that message in the media and movies, believing that somehow business relationships were vastly *different* than, and separate from, personal relationships. The message was that to be successful in growing a business, one must also be cold, ruthless, and uninvolved.

Then, I started my own businesses and realized that concept was way off the mark!

In every single business, what has brought the fastest and most sustainable success has been developing and nurturing *the relationships*. Relationships with new and existing clients. Relationships with potential clients. Relationships with vendors. Relationships with fellow service providers. Relationships with providers of complimentary services. Relationships with fellow associates and networkers.

Running and growing a successful business is pretty much ONE BIG relationship-fest, all of which is very personal!

Clients do not hire unless they feel you will deliver on your promises. Vendors do not support your business unless they feel you will deliver on your promises. Associates do not refer you to others unless they feel you will deliver on your promises.

Realize that you are also a client, a vendor and an associate to other business owners. Yes, healthy and successful business relationships are a two-way street.

When clients feel heard, treated with respect and appreciated, they want to do business with you. When vendors feel heard, treated with respect and appreciated, they want to do business with you. When associates feel heard, treated with respect and appreciated, they want to do business with you.

Is that really different from any other relationship? Don’t we all want to feel heard, treated with respect and appreciated?

Along the way, I’ve heard a lot of advice regarding business relationships. One of the most helpful was actually focused on human relationships in general, and I applied it to business: Jack Canfield said that it’s unrealistic to expect everyone to appreciate you. Holding that expectation sets us up for disappointment and resentment which poison our relationships with others.

However, he also said…

When you walk into any room: Approximately 25% of the people in the room will like you immediately before you even speak. Approximately 25% of the people in the room will dislike you immediately before you even speak. And, the remaining 50% of the people in the room could care less, either way.

Applying Jack’s point to business, I realized this: Give your attention and energy to the clients (potential, new and existing), vendors, and associates who naturally appreciate you and your services.

Stop trying to impress the unimpressable. Release the need-to-please the unpleasable. Let the unhappy ones go about finding those service providers with whom they naturally connect so they have a chance of being happier.

Set your intention to work with clients who appreciate and value your products and services.
Let it be OK that it’s not 100% of the people and businesses on the planet. Trust me, with 25% of the businesses appreciating you, you will do very well! Plus, because you are happier, those 25% will hire you more and refer you more to like-minded business owners.

If you’ve got existing clients who never seem happy, who are always complaining, it’s time to have a talk with them. If you have had a happy client suddenly shift into an unhappy one, take the time to find out if it’s a temporary or permanent issue. If there is no way to fully support the client in a way that’s enjoyable for you, it’s OK to encourage them to find another resource. That’s my diplomatic way of saying fire the client. Someday, they’ll thank you!

Following this process of focusing only on the clients who truly appreciate you, and letting go of those who don’t, allows you to savor the happy relationships with clients, vendors, and associations while having more fun in your day-to-day business! Successful and happy business owners take the time to get to know and support their clients, vendors and fellow associates. They also appreciate clients, vendors, and associates who support them. Are you one of those clients, vendors and associates?

It’s your turn to share your stories and thoughts in the comments below. What is one step you can take today to focus on the clients who appreciate and value you?

We are Vibrational Transmitters

coherence_heartAnyone who has worked with me has heard me speak about the science behind metaphysical teachings, specifically how the mind, brain, and heart work. Of all the people I know who speak on this subject, Gregg Braden is the one who really *understands* this material, and *communicates* this somewhat complicated information very clearly.

Below is one of my favorite videos of Gregg speaking about how scientists first realized that the emotions of humans was affecting the electro-magnetic field of the Earth, and how *that* realization led to more studies.

Take few moments to watch this *powerful* clip:

Here are some of the major points you’ll want to listen for in this video:

1. We have the power to affect the magnetic fields of the Earth. Shifts in the Earth’s electro-magnetic field spike in response to human emotions (i.e. after disasters) and have been picked up by the U.S. GOES satellites.

2. This lead to research to understand how this can happen. It has revealed two false scientific assumptions: A.) Everything is separate from everything else,  and B.) Our inner experiences (thought, feeling, emotion, and belief) have no effect on the world beyond our bodies.

3. We can intentionally choose to positively effect the magnetic fields of the Earth, to which every human is linked. When we feeling appreciation/gratitude/compassion in our hearts, for ourselves and/or others, it is called a heart-coherent state. Abraham-Hicks refers to it as being in the Vortex.

4. The brain generates an electro-magnetic field, but it is relatively weak compared to the heart. The human heart creates an electro-magnetic field that is FAR more powerful than brain waves ~ 100x more powerful electrically, and up to 5,000x more powerful magnetically! (Researched by the Institute of HeartMath)

5. The physical world, as we know it, is made up of the two fields of energy ~ electrical and magnetic. Our physics books now tell us that *if* we can change either the electrical or the magnetic field of an atom, we *change* that atom. This is how we change our bodies and the stuff this world is made of ~ through the heart-coherent emotions we transmit through our hearts.

6. When we get into the research and ancient teachings, what we experience appears to be less about attraction and more about *mirroring* back to us what we transmit out into the quantum field.

Watch the video for more details, and then share below how you will use this information to improve your life and those of your loved ones? How will you use this information to improve your business?

Yes, You ARE a Master Manifestor!

Through the course of working with small business owners with Quantum MasterMind for Solopreneurs and coaching individuals, most of the clients struggle to get to the place where they can imagine RECEIVING what they are asking for. Many struggle to believe that it’s possible to have what they want. They do not see themselves as powerful manifestors.

Of course, they usually have a non-supportive story in their head that goes something like this…

“OMG, this is really BIG! I really WANT this to happen, but I just don’t know how to create it! How can I possibly bring it into my life IF I don’t know how to make it happen? Maybe this is too big for me. Maybe it just isn’t possible…”

Seriously, with that kind of story going on, who could expect to receive what they want? One of the keys to receiving what you ask for is to practice FEELING AS-IF you are already living your new desire. Doing so conditions the mind to be open to the experience, and then you notice those opportunities all around you. This is how you begin deliberately molding consciousness into reality.

The Law of Attraction is always lining you up with experiences that match your dominant vibration. So, when you vibrate at the place of…I just don’t know how to create it…I don’t know how to make it happen…this is too big for me…it just isn’t possible, take a wild guess what you’ll experience?

One day, I was thinking about how I could help my clients overcome their block to receiving while sitting on my couch with my legs up on the ottoman. My kitties, sensing an opportune moment for being loved, immediately commenced pinning me down. Louise got in her usual spot on my lap and began purring loudly. Thelma then cuddled herself closely to my left, effectively wedging me into the corner of the couch. Amidst this abundance of purring fur, which always evokes an avalanche of loving feelings, I began recalling how these elderly kitties had come into my life: I intended it.

I intended that when it was time to adopt a new kitty, the next one would love to lie in my lap and be petted, would have long hair and be beautiful, would not claw me, and would be very well socialized. I intended being open for two cats, and if I did get two cats, they would get along very well. Where I live, only indoor cats are allowed so I knew it would have to be a cat who was happy being indoors. Then, I let it go. In fact, I recall it was a weekend and I took an afternoon nap.

Notice that I set forth an idea of what I wanted to experience, imagined how that would *feel*, and then let it go. I didn’t judge my current experience, I just put my mind on what would be great, imagined some of the details that would make me happy (long fur, not being clawed, possibly 2, both kitties getting along, etc.), and let it go. By letting go, I mean that I trusted that when the time was right, it would all come together.

Almost a month-to-the-day after setting this intention, I was unexpectedly in a position to adopt when my previous cat died. That same day, I found Thelma and Louise: Two older (calmer) sister kitties who were long-haired, declawed, and were gorgeous. They had to be indoors because they were de-clawed, and it’s clear they *like* being indoors.  Louise looked like a cat who had previously owned me and purrs like a motorboat, so I took first to her. However, Thelma soon won me over with her amazingly loving and human-like personality.

Just thinking about how I had intended something very specific, then GOT IT, made me begin to look at other experiences I had intended and they came to pass. There were many! In fact, the more I recalled, the more there was to recall. Suddenly, it dawned on me that probably MOST people have many experiences they recall desiring and then they experienced them at some point. I bet you have MANY experiences you can recall that will get you into the feeling place of RECEIVING!

Recalling those times in your life when you decided that you wanted an experience, and then did, is a fantastic way to:

1. Remind yourself of all the times you have had an intention and then lived it, and…

2. Remember the FEELING of RECEIVING what you’ve asked for so you can practice feeling it often!

Take a moment to recall those times you’ve asked or intended for an experience, and the Universe provided it. Remember the feeling of getting it? Hold that feeling in your heart and allow yourself to really FEEL it. Practice that feeling as often as possible.

If you do this, it is doubtful you will question your ability to receive what you ask for. However, if the question does come up, you will quickly be able to recall and FEEL the memory of asking and receiving!

Can’t recall anything worthy of  a Master Manifestor? Start with your BODY! The fact that you are alive and that you manifested something that cannot even be created by other humans nor the components bought to build a body means you are a Master Manifestor.

It’s your turn! Click comments below and share some memorable intentions that came into physical form for you…

Effective Solopreneur: Aligning with Your Natural Creativity Cycles

I was recently reminded of the Creative Cycles and realized that it is not exclusive to artists, but everyone ~ as we are all creators of our life experiences. I share this
information with you now so you can begin asking yourself how you can use these cycles to help yourself and your business.
Are you aware of your creative cycles?
Are you taking advantage of their natural ebb and flow to enjoy creating your art, your life, your business?
About 7 years ago, when I was creating a lot of fine art watercolors, a fellow artist friend shared a small hand-bound bound book that explained the natural cycles of
creativity. To be honest, up to this point, I hadn’t even noticed that there were predictable cycles. Although, I had noticed that if I wasn’t creating in some way it was hard to
get the creative process going again.
The book was written by a woman, an artist herself, who was getting her Masters in Psychology at the University of California at Santa Cruz. Unfortunately, I don’t remember
he name, but this gal had noticed a creative cycle in herself and others and decided to self-publish a book about the process. She knew my friend and had given her one
of the hand-bound copies of the book, and my friend shared the book with me. So, I began reading the little book and was amazed how much it not only resonated but
explained a lot!
The author suggested there are four common stages of creativity: Gestation, Inspiration, Creation/Birth, Renewal/Rest. These cycles happen in a certain order, like seasons
of the year, but differ in their length from artist to artist, and project to project.
If you are a successful non-commercial fine artist or a writer of novels, whether you are consciously aware of them or not, you are successfully managing these cycles. If
you are just starting out or an unsuccessful artist, you may not be taking advantage of what these cycles can do for you. If you are a commercial artist, designer (interior,
web, etc.), these cycles are most-likely tied more to the projects you are working on for clients.
Here’s the breakdown of the four stages, as I recall them:
Gestation
This is the stage where things are quiet creatively, but you are feeling hopeful because you are noticing interesting experiences, gathering ideas, deciding what you want
to work on next.
Inspiration
This is the stage where you find a new idea that *excites* you. It might be a single idea, or one idea that quickly spawns many additional ideas. It may be something you
observe outside of yourself or something that pops into your mind. The topic feels juicy and pregnant with potential. You begin whittling down the ideas collected to decide
what you really want to focus upon.
Creation/Birth
This is the stage where you begin taking action toward materializing the inspired idea, from start to finish. The creator’s energy is high, and they often feel full of life and
vibrant. The work may take on a *life of it’s own*, possibly even going in a new direction not considered in the Gestation or Inspiration stage.
Renewal/Rest
This is the stage creatives enter upon completion of the Creation/Birth stage. Often, the artist has been focusing so intensely on the previous stage, that this stage may feel
like a shock. New or Inexperienced creators may find this stage comes relatively unexpectedly. Most creators might find themselves feeling low, possibly even feeling
depressed, in comparison to the high-energy stage of Creation/Birth. Doubt creeps in, and in this low energy stage, the creator begins questioning if they will ever do
anything worthwhile again. In extreme cases, a creator susceptible to addictions may do drugs or drink to deal with the low energy, doubt, worry, and fear. However, if the
artist is aware of these stages and knows *this one, too, shall pass*, they can embrace it and move through this stage relatively quickly~sometimes hours, versus days,
weeks, or months.
How Does This Relate to You?
For centuries, farmers have known to sow seeds, nurture the plants, and harvest with the seasons. Following the natural cycles makes farming easier and more productive.
The same is true for your business. When you read through these stages, above, did anything stand out for you? Did you find yourself seeing connections in your own
creative cycles?
At the end of large client projects, I often got ill or, at the very least,  needed to sleep 14 hours a day for at least a week or more. Prior to understanding the cycles, I would
often beat myself up about getting ill or needing excess sleep. I doubted myself and wondered if I was depressed, even though I felt optimistic the vast majority of the
time. Once I knew about this stage I realized it was not only to be expected, but a good thing that I could look forward to experiencing. I prepared myself for it and
arranged lots of self-care in advance knowing it would be most appreciated. As a result, this stage went from 2+ weeks down to a few days, sometimes just a weekend or
a self-care-filled-afternoon to recharge. Knowing about this stage, preparing for and embracing it made a huge difference!
I also began appreciating the Gestation and Inspiration stages more, instead of putting all of my focus on the Creation/Brith stage ~including the expectation of being in that
one stage ALL the time~I began to see how each stage had value to my creativity.
What stage would you say you are in right now?
What can you do to embrace this stage and prepare for the next one?
How can you use these stages to plan your business activities (including Marketing and Service/Product Creation) so they are fun for you, rather than forced?

I was recently reminded of the Creative Cycles and realized that they are not exclusive to artists, but everyone ~ as we are all creators of our life experiences. I share this information with you now so you can begin asking yourself how you can use these cycles to help yourself and your business.

Are you aware of your creativity cycles, or are you forcing yourself to be always “ON”?

Are you taking advantage of their natural ebb and flow to enjoy creating your art, your life, your business?

Creativity Cycles

About 7 years ago, when I was creating a lot of fine art watercolors, a fellow artist friend shared a small hand-bound book that explained the natural cycles of creativity. To be honest, up to this point, I hadn’t even noticed that there were predictable cycles. Although, I had noticed that if I wasn’t creating in some way it was hard to get the creative process going again.

The book was written by a woman, an artist herself, who was getting her Masters in Psychology at the University of California at Santa Cruz. Unfortunately, I don’t remember the author’s name, but this gal had noticed a creativity cycle in herself and others, and had developed a hypothesis about how to work with the cycles. She noticed that everyone benefited by working with the cycles, rather than against them, and decided to self-publish a book about the process. She knew my friend and had given her one of the hand-bound copies of the book, and my friend shared the book with me. So, I began reading the little book and was amazed how much it not only resonated but explained a lot!

The author suggested there are four common stages of creativity: Gestation, Inspiration, Creation/Birth, Renewal/Rest. These cycles happen in a predictable order, like seasons of the year, but differ in their length from artist to artist, and from project to project.

Here’s the breakdown of the four stages, as I recall them:

1 | Gestation

This is the stage where things are quiet creatively, but you are feeling hopeful because you are noticing interesting experiences, gathering ideas, deciding what you want to work on next. This stage comes after the creator emerges from the Renewal/Rest stage.

2 | Inspiration

This is the stage where you find a new idea, or series of ideas, that really feels *exciting*. It might be a single idea, or one idea that quickly spawns many additional ideas. It may be something you observe outside of yourself or something that pops into your mind. The topic feels juicy and pregnant with potential. You begin whittling down the ideas collected to decide what you really want to focus upon.

3 | Creation/Birth

This is the stage where you begin taking action toward materializing the inspired idea, from start to finish. The creator’s energy is high, and they often feel full of life and vibrant. The work may take on a *life of it’s own*, possibly even going in a new direction not considered in the Gestation or Inspiration stage.

4 | Renewal/Rest

This is the stage creators enter upon completion of the Creation/Birth stage. Often, the creator has been focusing so intensely on the previous two stages, that this stage may feel like a comparative shock. New or inexperienced creators may find this stage comes relatively unexpectedly.

This can be a very critical stage for creators because most find themselves feeling low, possibly even feeling depressed, in comparison to the high-energy stages of Inspiration and Creation/Birth. Unprepared, doubt, worry and fear can easily creep in during this time, and in this low-energy stage, the creator begins questioning if they will ever do anything worthwhile again. They simply don’t have the energy to contemplate something new, and often feel defeated because of the low energy levels.

In extreme cases, a creator susceptible to addictions may retreat to drugs or alcohol to deal with the low energy, and/or soothe doubt, worry, and fear. However, if the creator is aware of these stages and knows *this one, too, shall pass*, they can embrace it and move through this stage relatively quickly~sometimes hours or days, versus months or years.

The creator knows they have left this stage when they find themselves entering the Gestation stage as they gently begin gathering more data and being intrigued by new ideas of theirs or other creators.

How Does This Relate to You or Your Business?

For centuries, farmers have known to sow seeds, nurture the plants, and harvest with the seasons. Following the natural cycles makes farming easier and more productive.

The same is true for your life and your business. Do you force yourself to create when you really need to rest, or try to rest when inspiration is striking? Do you honor or resist your natural creativity cycles? When you read through these stages, above, did anything stand out for you? Did you find yourself seeing connections to your own creative cycles?

At the end of large commercial client projects (Rest/Renewal), I often got ill or, at the very least,  needed to sleep 14 hours a day for at least a week or more. Prior to understanding the Creativity Cycles, I would often beat myself up about getting ill or needing excess sleep. I doubted myself and wondered if I was depressed, even though I felt optimistic the vast majority of the time. Once I knew about this stage, though, I realized it was not only to be expected, but a good thing that I could look forward to experiencing! I prepared myself for it mentally, and arranged lots of self-care in advance, knowing this stage was on its way. As a result, my experience of Renewal/Rest dropped from from 2+ weeks down to a few days, sometimes just a weekend or a self-care-filled-afternoon to recharge. Knowing about this stage, preparing for and embracing it made a huge difference for me!

I also began appreciating the Gestation and Inspiration stages more, instead of putting all of my focus on the Creation/Birth stage ~including the expectation of being in that one stage ALL the time~I began to see how each stage had value to my creativity.

Here are some questions to ask yourself now:

What stage would you say you are in right now?

What can you do to embrace this stage and prepare for the next one?

How can you use these stages to plan your business activities (including Marketing and Service/Product Creation) so they are fun for you, rather than forced?

How can you combine these stages with your knowledge of the Law of Attraction to create true synergy?

I invite you all to share your insights and thoughts below in the comments to other readers will benefit…
