Have you ever done this: You got clear about what you really wanted, focused on it with positive energy, and then waited and watched intently for signs of your desire manifesting?
Did you find yourself keeping track of all you are doing, constantly taking score and waiting, waiting, waiting… and feeling incredibly frustrated by the process?
Last Friday, I was on the Good Vibe University WaterCooler call ~ a weekly open call for GVU members about random Law of Attraction (LOA) topics of interest. Jeannette Maw, the Good Vibe Coach and founder of GVU, was talking about a manifesting technique that clearly worked for others, but didn’t work for her when she tried it.
As she spoke, I got a familiar image that I often see with the clients I have helped: The Watched Pot. I made a comment that when we are taking a specific action only for the result we are seeking, we might be flowing the impatient vibe of “come on, come on…where is it? where is it? where is it?” Just like a proverbial watched pot that never seems to boil, manifestations never seem to happen.
Jeannette heard my comment and wrote this entertaining blog post about the Watched Pot Syndrome.
I’ve actually seen this behavior with a lot of clients, those who are new to LOA as well as experienced LOA teachers. Many fall victim to taking score too soon and too often, so busy looking for results to show up, looking for the tiniest sign, that it keeps them in a suspended state of NOT seeing, not experiencing, not manifesting.
Louise Hay equates this to planting a seed, watering it, nurturing and then digging it up every few hours to see how it’s doing. We all know from experience that it’s best to plant and nurture the seed, and THEN let nature take it’s course. Otherwise, you’ll kill the seed and it will never have a chance to blossom. We give it the energy it needs and the time for the process to unfold.
The hardest part of manifesting may not be the seeding and nurturing of your dreams, but taking your attention OFF of them long enough to enjoy the rest of your life! This is one reason why I recommend having a prepared “Joy List” you can go to any time you desire. I also recommend having lists of activities you know you enjoy so you have many options to choose from.
Distracting yourself with activities and experiences that feel good will not only help the time pass quickly, but it will also help you to line up your energy with what you prefer to experience.
It also will help you to stop taking score too soon or too often, and stop impatiently watching that proverbial pot (of gold).
What do you do to take your mind off taking score too soon or too often? Share it in the comments below…

This USED to be me….until I did that phone call session with you. Since then I’ve been practicing your tips and lovin life. It’s not perfect, but it feels a bit easier to deal with. Great post here. P.S. I have a couple of your affirmation cards on the bathroom mirror.

Sheila, I *so love* that you have shifted your thinking and are taking inspired action ~ and seeing/feeling the results of it! Don’t know anyone whose life is *perfect*, but feeling better is a FABULOUS way to move toward what you really want to experience.
Also love that you have AffirmingSpirit affirmation cards on your mirror!
Many blessings,
Nancy
Yes, I think *perfect* is boring. lol. Also, I just added a card to the mirror, “I relax and allow my self to do excellent on tests”! (does that sound familiar? )
– finals week for my kids.
you rock!

You know, I’ve been thinking about this, Nancy and why it is that I sometimes take score. (So I could stop doing that.)
I realized that I was measuring some things because I had been told (and believe) that what we measure grows. Which makes sense, since whatever we’re focused on, we attract more of. Right?
So obviously we need to do that in a way that supports what we want, like measuring income instead of debt – or noticing all the things our sweetie does right instead of does “wrong” …
.. so I’m wondering how the non-boiling watched pot reconciles with the “what we measure grows” concept? Any ideas?
I knew you’d be the perfect one to ask this to!

Jeannette, it’s so true that we are told to *count our money* (by financial people) and it will grow. I know you have a financial background, Jeannette, so I’m wondering if that is also playing into your need keep track or stay on top of the return on investment (ROI)?
I think you hit the nail on the head with…
I believe the key here is: Supportive thoughts and actions that *feel good*~including only taking score WHEN IT FEELS GOOD. For some, taking the initial score of debt feels good, so they can decide a plan of action, but doing it daily drives them bonkers. For others, taking score of the income or the actions they are taking to increase their income is the only thing that feels good.
How does this relate to pot-watching? Put the pot on the stove (set your intention with positive feeling, focus on it, trust it will come, believe it’s possible) and let the POT tell you when it’s boiled. When your manifestation arrives, YOU’LL KNOW IT!
It’s kind of like submitting a request at the OutSourcerers Forum and not returning until you have a success story to share. Or giving the issue up to God or Angels, knowing that the best outcome will take place.
Does that answer your question?
Many blessings,
Nancy
PS Just heard Abe (on 2nd DVD of You Can Heal Your Life Expanded Set) say that more than 99% of our manifestations are completed vibrationally before we begin to *see* the results show up in physical, looking for evidence will hold us back. Therefore, they said, if we take score too soon (they used those words!!!), without yet seeing the evidence of the manifestation, we may assume that what we desire is NOT on it’s way. As we believe our desire is not on it’s way, we then create that experience. Sounds like they explained the Watched Pot Syndrome.
There’s something about attachment to the outcome that can keep it from manifestation. Keeping score has a feeling of attachment to the outcome. Attachments can tie up the energy and disrupt the flow…slow it down.
As humans we often tend to focus on the goal. Yet the journey is just as important as the goal and perhaps even more so. The goal offers motivation. Yet when we reach our goal the joy is often momentary. Perhaps the key is to enjoy the journey. Have fun along the way. Be in the moment for that is all we ever truly have.
Love and Blessings,
Susan
Nancy, another wonderful post
I’m developing strong manifesting muscles in trusting and leaving the pot to boil because somehow I’ll be alerted to it at the right time. (It’s happening to me more and more that I just can’t deny this is how Big U works.)
What I’ve found is that I have little to go do while it’s boiling! I’m so used to running around, working, the usual, now is my time to cultivate a joy list. What an exciting time (and also a blessing
)

Hi, Peter,
Thanks for stopping by and commenting!
I know what you mean about setting the intention…and then…tick tock tick tock…What do you DO with yourself once you’ve relaxed, had some fun, and the manifestation (OR some good intuitive guidance on actions) hasn’t shown up?!?
Today (3/9/11) I heard Abigail Steidley address this very question in her BodyTalk call on GVU. She gave a few AMAZING energy exercises that she recommends doing when you feel you need to *take action*, but you haven’t a CLUE what actions to actually take! In addition to crafting your go-to JOY LIST, be sure to check out that call, Peter!
Many blessings,
Nancy
