The Practice of Power Thinking

[Part 2 of 2]
by Joy Nordquist, MA

[Continued from Summer 2004 Newsletter]

Power Thinking Put to Use
Had Jeff Bezos asked questions coming from fear rather than positive possibility he probably would not have ever started his journey, let alone stayed the course. It’s not that he faced no downside… one big negative was that he had no expertise in technology…it’s simply that this wasn’t the thrust of his consciousness. Well directed, positive curiosity, such as Bezos displayed in the launching of Amazon, is a cornerstone of Power Thinking.

Bezos clearly listened to his emotions, letting his passion and desire, as well as his intuition about where the web was headed in the future, guide his actions.  He also enlisted an attorney, web experts and others to help him navigate the course of his new business. Here again, without this willingness to reach out beyond his own mind, he would probably not have succeeded.

Right Brain Onboard
A big part of Power Thinking is imagination, using the right brain and creativity as part of the thought process. It’s only when doing this that we step outside the past and repeating what has already been, and begin to create anew. Bezos displayed synthetic creativity in the conceptualizing of Amazon…the bringing together of things already in existence and synthesizing them into a new form.

Our creative abilities, coupled with faith and optimism, have unlimited potential.  As young children, we play make-believe naturally, but as we move into adulthood we are often boxed into limited thinking by parents and others trying to protect or correct us.  Relearning how to trust our creativity takes courage and practice. With creativity, we open possibility; to design the next space shuttle, write a Pulitzer Prize winning novel or create a world class marriage takes dynamic, dream-based thinking. To unlearn our limitations, we need to reprogram ourselves to think passionately and creatively, to trust that amazing part of our mind.

Power Tools for Power Thinking
One of the ways to reprogram limited thinking is to change core beliefs.  There are many power tools for doing this…meditation, visualization, prayer, counseling, coaching, inspirational books, a master mind group…but one of the best and most direct is the crafting and regular use of affirmations.

How Affirmations Work
Affirmations are beliefs held, thoughts that become a core part of ones mental and behavioral operating system.

For example, a negative, externally imposed affirmation might come from a parent who repeated to a child, “You’ll never amount to anything” or “ You’re stupid.”  Those thoughts then become the unconscious reality that all behavior and possibility is based upon, even into adulthood. Thoughts, repeated over time and with emotion, create our beliefs. These beliefs become like a template over which we measure any life possibility.

If Jeff Bezos had the belief he would fail at anything he tried, he would never have gone beyond the reading of that web statistic; it would literally have never occurred to him that he might capitalize on it. The good news is that many successful people overcome daunting early negativity and override negative old tapes. And so can you!

Affirmations can be deliberately created and our self beliefs changed. When crafted with heartfelt emotion and clarity, and repeated over time, affirmations become powerful, life-changing beacons directing us to a greater future. Creating your own affirmations is your opportunity to choose for yourself what you want to believe, not settle for the spoon-fed programming served by your parents, peers and culture.

Crafting Affirmations
Creating affirmations is akin to creating conscious self-talk. An affirmation is a statement of what you choose to believe about yourself, spoken…

            ...In the first person

            ...Present tense

...Using positive terms (focusing on what you want...not what you don’t want)

           ...Memorably brief

           ...Using vivid, active words…and emotion

Affirmations crafted from your heart, your deepest desire, are best. Someone elses words or ideas will fall flat. Some examples—not to copy but just as a tickler to help with your own scripting—are:

I joyously create a profitable, successful business

My relationships are mutually supportive, loving and fun

I am confident, passionate and fulfilled in my work

I have ample time to do all I need or want to do

Claiming the Change You Desire
Affirmations are powerful tools that help reprogram your core insecurities, doubts and fears by helping you focus on what you want to create, not on what you fear or dread. Daily repetition of these messages, using visual, auditory and kinesthetic references…such as affirmation cards, notes, a poster, audio tapes…will reinforce the desired change in self belief.  The more positive emotion on board and the more senses you include, the better! So, using a beautiful, symbolic illustrations, seeing the words, repeating them aloud, reading them regularly…all help to integrate the message.

The next time a positive opportunity dances across your mind and you hear a voice dismissing it, telling you it isn’t possible or you aren’t able, instead of letting it go, use it as a catalyst. Sit down and craft a plan in the form of an affirmation…say YES! to possibility, just like Jeff Bezos did…and watch your life change in amazon proportions!

Affirming: Training the Mind

by Nancy Barry-Jansson

Watching this summer's Olympic games in Athens reminded me how hard these athletes train their bodies to perform, with singular purpose and unwavering devotion to their sport of choice. However, training the body is only one aspect of preparing for successful competition. Perhaps the greater feat is training the mind to stay focused and block out fears or doubts while the body learns and performs. These elite athletes must conquer their mind so their bodies can function at a peak level, without fail time after time after time.

The Ripple Effect
Training the mind to stay focused and positive is not just for athletes. All of us can benefit from this kind of conditioning, and affirmations are a great tool to get you there. Regular use of affirmations has a ripple effect with countless benefits beyond positive thinking. Have you ever noticed how you feel or behave when you are thinking positively? If you are like most people, you probably smile and laugh more, breathe deeper, and find your sense of hope is contagious. Feeling better about yourself, chances are you'll exercise more regularly which further boosts your endorphins—hormones that naturally lift your spirits. Then, because you exercise more, you have greater strength, endurance, and body confidence. You start to pay closer attention to what you eat and you sleep better. Exuding confidence, you attract similar people with positive attitudes into your life, and the ripples just keep coming. With endorphins flowing through your blood, life's little irritations seem less irritating, so you cope better which means your relationships become more stable. Ripple, ripple, ripple...

Say, Think, Feel, See, Experience
Saying your affirmations daily is a great start, but don't stop there! Say them throughout the day while breathing deeply, and think them whenever it is not as convenient to speak them. Take a few moments during your daily breaks to
close your eyes, feel your affirmations coming alive, see your goals happening in your mind's eye, imagine yourself experiencing your goals. Immerse yourself in the experience. By taking a little time every day to focus energy on your dreams and goals, the experiences and accomplishments that mean the most to you, you are consciouly guiding your subconscious mind and conditioning your mind to focus.

Affirmations and Visualization
Taking the time to see your dream come true in your mind's eye is known as visualization. Elite athletes have used visualization for years to give them a competitive edge. Studies have shown that basketball players who practice less but visualize more tend to be more effective when on the court. This is because we are less likely to make errors in our mind's eye, which trains the mind how the body should perform. The Russian Olympic team discovered in 1980 that athletes who regularly incorporated visualization were far more likely to medal than those who practiced more without visualizing.

You can use these same techniques to help you achieve your heart's desire. It is not necessary to know exactly how or when you will accomplish your goal or experience your dream, just trust that you will do so at the perfect time. The key to these tools is using them regularly and not judging yourself until they show up in your life. We often want things to change or appear instantly in our lives, but the truth is that everything happens in the perfect time and in the perfect way, even when it is not what we would have chosen. Your job is not to judge, but to stay focused while keeping the doubt and fear at bay.

Try this experiment: Think of one accomplishment or experience that you've been aiming toward. Take a few minutes to sit or lay quietly where you will not be interrupted, and keep paper and pen nearby. Breathe deeply and slowly five times, feel your muscles relax, and then imagine yourself already having accomplished what you set out to do or experience. Feel yourself in the situation and notice everything about this experience and remind yourself that "All is Well". Pay close attention to as much detail as possible, and when you feel you've completely immersed yourself in this experience, open your eyes and write down at least five statements that sum up the experience. If you can write down more than five, that's great!

From this list of summary statements, you can create any number of affirmations to remind yourself of this visualization. Write the affirmations on your cards and keep them around your house, office, and car to remind you throughout each day. Read your affirmations every day before and after visualizing, and remember to breathe deeply. Then, start noticing who you meet, the thoughts that come to you, and the questions that are answered. Chances are, the power of affirmations and visualizations will work magic in your life.

Many Blessings to you as you go about your day!
